Scruffy just felt dirty through the entire process.

You know they are trying their damnedest to frick you over.

I'm sure this isn't the first time Scruffy felt dirty

I make sure I prepare what I'm going to negotiate and enjoy the process.

then low ball the frick out of them on the trade in.

I've talked to 4 dealerships who valued my trade.

3500 for 1 and the other three 4k.

They all said the same thing. We have an accident where someone aideswiped us and I had to have a door repainted.

They said it cut my evaluation in half. One repainting of a door and you lose 50%. Insane.

this is the type of vehicle you sell yourself since your trade in tax credit was only $300 or so. Put it on the market for 6-7, take 5500-6500, profit.

True, but the exorbitant amount Dollar Wise of the add-on accessories is something they have full control over.

When I was in this situation with a particular dealership I asked them to send me a cost breakdown of all the add-on accessories.

For example it didn't take a genius to figure out that charging $1,000 for a spray-in bed liner was a tad inflated...

I'd like to see the list of add ons as well. FWIW we charge 700 for a bed liner

Jasper Jeep in Jasper, Georgia used to DOMINATE the jeep market because the price on the window was what you paid, period. They were deadly serious...and folks bought Jeeps from them as fast as they could get them off the truck. This was in the 80's when everybody and his brother was driving one of the small Cherokees. If you were there on a Saturday and found one you wanted to buy there'd be 3-4 folks waiting for you to change your mind. Prices were not fantastic but they absolutely did not pull any shite ever. If you wanted to take a test drive the person with you wouldn't even talk about the car because they did not care if you bought it or not, they were paid by the hour. Alas I don't think they exist any longer or if they do they are just like all dealers and crooked as a dogs leg...

Last one I bought was from a broker as well. So much easier and less time consuming. Drive car at local dealerships, get quote from broker, see if local dealerships want to match it or even get close (spoiler alert: they don't), make deal with broker and either ship it or go get it. With the broker fee and shipping the car you may only save $1000 or $2000, but the process is so much easier.

20 year retail guy here.
1st you can’t use Covid math to justify your reasoning. 2nd EVERY vehicle has 3-5% mark up. 3rd what really gets the consumer is you owe 40k on a ten year old vehicle that’s worth 18k, you put zero down and financed your taxes too. Oh and your credit sucks and the only lender willing to take the risk wants to charge a 3,000 fee. But it’s always the dealer trying hard to get you! Ha. Ha ha

I figured it was worth one day of my time to save approximately $5,000 compared to buying locally.

When you get back burnered at your local dealers for service because you didn't buy from them you may feel like your great value isn't as great as you thought.

I would only get work done at a dealership that is either warranty or recall related.

My car buying process:

- Go to Tesla website, click a few buttons, 5 minutes later car is purchased
- Go to Lightstream, spend 10 minutes applying for loan
- Get loan money from Lightstream the next day after applying
- Go pick up car

Easy peasy

Please stop, you'll make people on here have eye twitches because you didn't laugh about how much you got over on the dealership and how you made them look stupid with high level negotiations. How dare you pay what something is priced at without haggling!

Loop someone in with a good deal on the purchase price online, then low ball the frick out of them on the trade in. But all that does is piss people off instead

Unfortunately some of these lots advertise at an unsustainable discount and hope to use the trade to at least break even or best case make a profit. I hate to say it but it's the public's obsession with best price that causes this problem. Not that I don't understand, just stating facts.

The majority of this thread would be floored with how much further they can get by being kind during a deal.

They are also the type who fail to realize the market decides the price.

100% of these types don’t value their time in any fashion either.

I've bought my last 2 new vehicles via phone and e-mail. I buy in TX because their prices are way lower than La. I share jpegs with the dealer, he offers a trade in price and the out the door cost of the new vehicle. I drive to TX, hand over my used vehicle and a check for the new vehicle, and drive new vehicle home ~ 5hrs one way. Time at the dealer about 30 min. 10 hr round trip but I save thousands of dollars.

This is really apples to oranges since other manufacturers can’t do this. I mean you can order a car and pick it up when it’s ready through a dealership.

But yeah I can’t just get it straight from ford or gm.

And then imagine if we all put in an order in for a Tesla. What’s the wait you think?

Seriously, if everyone that purchased a vehicle in 2023 purchased a Tesla instead, would they all be in one?

The public has that same obsession for all retail products.

The industries where this is a problem are the industries where the true prices are intentionally difficult to determine.

Car dealerships unfortunately have earned their reputations for dishonesty. If they wanted to clean it up they could voluntarily adopt enforced standards for behavior (especially advertised prices)

I bought a car a few weeks ago. Found the one I wanted online at the dealership, called and made an appointment to test drive.

Drove the car
Came to price negotiations I told them what I was willing to pay (said $29k on a $39k car).
I let them “negotiate” with me
Girl had to go “talk to her supervisor” several times.
Finally got to the price I was actually planning to pay based on the research of what the car was worth other places. ($32k)
The actual manager did come out to talk to me when I refused to pay any more.
Bought the car for $32k.

Overall it took about 2hrs, wasn’t that stressful. Probably didn’t break the record for “best deal ever”, but I paid a price I was comfortable with.

Customers are far more dishonest than the salespeople they resent. I tell new salespeople to get ready because we get lied to for a living, our job is to sort through the lies to counter objections
