Car dealers laugh at hard asses like you. You're playing a game just like they are, the only difference is they already have to be there all day.
It doesn't have to be a pain in the butt.

I negotiate for a living , I love playing the game, and watching so-called professional salesmen lose. Just negotiated a deal for a family member, loved the whipped look on smart A sales Mgr when he lost,

By law all those fees should be broken down. They cannot markup state fees such as plate, registration, title and every state has a cap on fees like documentation, notary and convenience.

If you were there and were going to pay the market price… they would waive it before you walked. If you agreed to thr taxes and fees.
Here is a pretty good YT channel on car buying.
If it’s taxable… it’s negotiable.

Too many dealerships add ridiculous mark-ups that are hurting the manufacturers bottom line.

These markups started back up during Covid, and dealers haven’t clued in that the market has reset.
That being said, according to Car Edge, the Trax is in the top 10 in sales (based on days on lot). Have you looked at the Buick Encore?

Again, competitive markets are back to pre covid pricing

My car buying process: - Go to Tesla website, click a few buttons, 5 minutes later car is purchased - Go to Lightstream, spend 10 minutes applying for loan - Get loan money from Lightstream the next day after applying - Go pick up car
Unfortunately the small government conservatives in Louisiana have made it illegal to buy a new car direct from the manufacturer so you gotta drive to Mississippi to pick the car up so there is a wrinkle but still way better than having to go through a dealer.
I own two teslas but still have a GMC as a 3rd vehicle.

Correct except you should never TELL them ur paying cash.. . negotiate everything , then at the last second tell them youve decided to pay cash , or just pay off the vehicle after the first month- but make sure you eliminate any ‘early payoff penalty’ BS from the contract before you sign it .. these deviant , miscreant car dealers LIVE for financing these days, there’s a guy on YT who lays it all out excellently but i can tremember his name to post it.. probbaly several people though you can search .
My daughter had a car picked out. Reviewed the price with the dealer. I called to tell them I was coming with a check (guess they thought she'd be financing) and they backed out on the deal. Said that price was only for financing. I'll never do business there.

For people who keep new cars a short time this amounts to thousands of dollars padding the dealer's pockets, and makes dealer pricing even less transparent.
Why the hell can't the tax assessor credit you for a notarized CarMax bill of sale within 30 days of your buying a new car somewhere else?
Seems like we should pester our state reps for this.

If they displayed those prices up front people flat out would not come. They get you in high pressure situations and get you to sign paperwork

Do your research beforehand. You should know what their inventory is, how much the dealer holdback is, etc before you go, have a number in your head based on a realistic value of your trade as well.
I give the dealership (and I tell them they only have one) one shot, I find on their lot the vehicle I want, check it over to make sure there’s not a problem (even with new there can be), and tell them what I’m willing to pay. Which will be a fair number.
If they come back with anything else, I get up and walk. Yes I’m the guy who will go to the dealership next door, drive back by with the one I just bought and wave.

This is funny. I’m doing the exact same thing for my daughter right now. Getting best prices from surrounding dealerships now. Will prob purchase the last day of the year. Supposedly that is when they make their best deals to get their bonus for x ammout of cars sold.
