How's Boone? I have a former student there and haven't seen her online since the storm.

Proprietary issues with CarPlay?

Unfortunately no, CarPlay works fine but the integrated Google maps doesn’t want to connect. The integrated map can use the whole screen whereas CarPlay only uses 70% or so.

My sister lives in Fletcher. Was back there visiting last week as she had surgery. Moved her to a rehab facility in Hendersonville next to Mud Creek. Brother in law text and asked if I remembered the 3 houses across the street from the entrance. Had to cut holes in the houses to get the people out.

Certainly had some bad flooding, but I did see that App St opened up their main dining hall to the general public, no charge for food.

So it would appear that there is some power in that area and available resources

If you’re worried about someone's whereabouts in Western North Carolina, NC Emergency Management says to Please call 211 (1-888-892-1162) and press one once connected. Have all information available (name, location, health conditions, etc.) to complete the request. Call volumes are high, but operators are processing requests as quickly as possible.

Praying you have good news about your sister soon. It is probably a communication issue. Join North Carolina’s Weather Authority on FB if you haven’t already.

I’m not sure if or how it possibly has one iota to do with the CURRENT SITUATION really, though

The current situation in many ways is to do to lack of resources that need to be allocated to be better prepared for situations like this. Having a water system facility instead of repairing it but actually building a system to prevent a shutdown. But I guess not having drinking water available for weeks or longer is not a concern over the experience some tourist may have in the mountains.

The more building on the mountain sides with expansion of roads has caused more erosion but yet the local government ignores the concerns of the environmental studies because there only focus is getting more tourists in the area. Again, who cares due to all the erosion that may cause landslides during storms like this happen even if told ahead of time. Maybe creating retention protection or stricter building requirements will help. But I guess people do not need their homes as long as the tourist have place to go when they come to visit.

I could go on and for someone that spent close to 40 years in that area as a resident it continues to get worse. But since you spend time in the area hopefully this CURRENT SITUATION does not disrupt any future travel plans to WNC.

You know, I didn’t intend for that to be offensive. I legitimately have heard that everyone is on an island. Basically stranded on a mountain. I was hoping that Trump made some statement on the subject. I’m voting for him by the way.

Boone got hit pretty hard. Still over 40% of the county without power. Water came down the hills on all sides, some pretty crazy videos of landslides and a ton of standing water on the main road in and out of the town. App's campus arena is open to the public and the dining halls are serving people. Got a buddy's house up there that got ruined, headed up to help him gut it in a few

What’s the evidence any of this contributed to what they are now facing? From all accounts, this was truly a 100 year type disaster that would have been equally disasterous pretty much no matter what anyone had done or not done prior - nothing can hold back the destruction of that much water so quickly in such a confined locale.

And in spite of your snarky retort, my sadness and prayers are more for the wonderful people I’ve met in that area over any selfish desires for myself. As someone who has also lived in a place that was dealt a rather similar blow, I can both understand in many ways what they are dealing with and also know it will take a lot of help from people elsewhere to get any semblance to things back on track.

This happened in 2004 with Fracis, Ivan, and Jeane when they came through. Same areas flooded just as bad in Asheville, same issues with water and other infrastructure throughout the area. Corps of Engineers and other studies were done to provide the area with what they needed to do to handle this in the future. It was ignored and was a big debate for many in the area. Maybe before 2004 it was something they could not prepare for, but this looks like 2004 all over again and what happens when those in charge ignore the info in front of them.

I will apologize for the snarky remarks just frustrated with the situation.

20-30" in a mountainous region is completely different than if that happens in a coastal plain.

It’s all good and I know the frustration well.

I purposely pointed out my outsider status to let it be known, but my post started with agreeing with your lamentation on all the dwindling other industries in the area. That didn’t occur because I like to visit, but like the place I live, it seems to often make it easier for “leaders” in such places look past such losses. It’s not a good cycle.

From what I know, I think that area may be better equipped to refocus on what’s actually important and imperative. I pray they are and will be looking for ways to help in any way I can.

Todd, Creston, Lansing and Boone got hit hard. Went Jefferson not too bad. It's catastrophic everywhere yet sporadic spots are fine in the upper elevations.
