Ought to be fine from the surge but it's a big risk in terms of wind. Chances are decent they scrape away not catching the worst but I don't think it's worth the risk they don't and tropical tornadoes are a thing too.

People have a hard time making these sort of risk calculations. Odds say you miss the worst of it but the downside risk if you do is huge. I'd personally be running west and a little north.

I am in Jacksonville Beach and would have to drive 5+ hours to find a hotel at this point.

My sister and her family bolted from JAX early this AM, around 5:30 EST - she's in Ocean Springs, MS right now headed to BSL.

Well, my company just cancelled our national sales meeting that was scheduled to start on Monday in Bonita Springs north of Naples.

Damn. I had a really good presentation to give, too.

This is what worries me about the SC coast. Look at the development in 1989 vs 2010 in Charleston.. It is pretty much like that all along the coast.

so a friend of mine is currently headed to Charleston South Carolina for a wedding happening Saturday night for a friend that has been planned for over a year. I told him they were cutting it too close to be playing with fire like this but he promised they are leaving first thing Sunday morning well before the outer bands get close.

My question to him was what if you get caught in horrible evacuation traffic and run out of gas? What if you get stuck evacuating and you can't find a hotel etc etc. I get that it's a huge wedding and it's been planned for over a year and all, Just seems risky to put all your close friends and family In unnecessary danger. Do the storm experts on this board think that's a little bit nuts or am I just overthinking this?

Schools are closed in Charleston tomorrow. I wouldn't be shocked if Gov. McMaster announced evacuations today to start this weekend.

With that said, I'd go to the wedding. Maybe he'll be lucky and most of the evac traffic will have cleared out by Sunday.
If there are mandatory evacuations, this wedding may happen, but the church will be closed and the reception location will, too. He should stay home and not waste his time.

Good to know. In the last two weeks I've had to ask you guys if I was being over the top ans projecting my fears onto my friends (Houston and now Miami) or if I'm justified in my slight hysteria for them. I just don't get the attraction to riding it out. I've seen too much. And who wants to be, at best, stranded without power with two kids?

I tried to talk my son out of going from Palm Harbor to that wedding.

He won't listen.

He went through the Iraq War and the Tuscaloosa tornado.

I think he believes he has nine lives.

College of Charleston just cancelled classes after today indefinitely.

I imagine The Citadel will be right behind them. MUSC is shut down till Wed-Thursday (education side)

We found a room downtown at the double tree for Sunday-Tuesday . It wasn't easy but there are still some rooms available.

Edit: downtown jax that is.

We have pets, so it becomes that much more difficult. We have a place to go in Palatka, but I think that could be even worse down there even though it is more inland.

If anyone is traveling north on I75 near Macon, GA the Sunoco Station right off of exit 162 just got a fuel truck and ready to go. Plus the stations in the area seem to have plenty of fuel.

What's the elevation and what kind of construction is the building they intend to stay in? If built to Post-Andrew Code and at an elevation above the surge, he should be okay so far as surviving the storm. Of course, if the house gets hit by a tornado, he screwed.

My dad used to run the shelters in the county I grew up in in Florida. The building that he and all the other county leaders/EMA people stayed in was like a damn citadel, LOL. Massive concrete walls, tiny, prison-like windows, huge concrete buttresses, and built on one of the highest points in the county and on top of another 12ft pile of compacted fill dirt. Offer that simply as an example of what engineers who specialize in this kind of stuff think is required to guarantee your safety in a CAT 5 storm.

The fun part comes in the weeks after. You need cash, non-perishable food, some way to prepare the food, potable and non-potable water, a couple pairs of clean clothes, and toilet paper, at least. A generator and plenty of gas for it are luxury items. Tarps, chainsaws, axes, are nice, too. A shite ton of charged cell phone battery packs are good, too.

If you go on Google maps and get on I-75 at Weston, look north. There is nothing but grass as far as you can see. Grass does not slow down the wind much. There is also a huge canal. It makes a few turns and runs miles to the ocean.

I was there about a year ago and was surprised how flat everything is.

We have a handful of employees in an offices in both Weston and Sunrise. We closed those offices tomorrow through Tuesday and advised them to evac. We'll look at the situation Tuesday evening and make a determination about the rest of the week.

All of my statement was based on path locations for the storm. It takes a bad path for that area wind is a big factor and surge could possibly be as well. My point is even if they are probably in to just miss the worst of a strong cat 4-5, there's a big enough chance it doesn't and the cost to staying at that point is pretty high.

I don't know if it's true, but I read something on FB this morning that hotels have to accept pets if you are evacuating.
