Pinellas is WEST not North of Tampa. It's a level A evac, (coastal) and all mobile homes no matter the zone. We are zone C so still holding at home. Just inland of the Tom Stuart Causeway on Boca Ciega Bay.
Any idea what zone Bradenton is? I have an uncle there and have been trying to get him to leave but he's stubborn. He lives on the water on the south side of Palma bay. He doesn't want to leave his boat.

Preliminary storm surge inundation map from NHC
These numbers will go higher if landfall in the area is imminent.
What are these current numbers assuming then? It doesn't look that bad at all considering a CAT 5 storm except for areas south of Miami, but I guess I don't understand these "preliminary" numbers in conjunction with your statement.

This is the problem. I am in Jacksonville Beach and would have to drive 5+ hours to find a hotel at this point.

Florida people: thoughts on someone riding it out in Weston, FL? It's about 13 miles inward from the coast near Miami.
Friend of mine is staying with his wife and two young kids and is just acting like no big deal, we are boarded up and ready to have hurricane parties. It's making my skin crawl with how non chalant he's being about it. Yesterday he told me it was too late to leave anyway. Why do people do this to themselves and their family? My assumption is that he's never lost anything to a storm. Maybe he's known people who have, but I don't know if people take it seriously enough until they lose it all.

Yes.

No idea but I was wondering why on the map there was a place labeled cooling canals.
Sounds like that would be a yes.
Remember that Delta flight?

Damn. I never thought I would say this but that is a pretty nice mobile home park.
My buddy's grandmother lived in a similar development in Orlando. It was kinda cool in a way how they are all packed in there. I could see it becoming a very friendly communal place.

The vote was an overwhelming 82% against it. It's a very close knit community. They probably regret it at this moment. They were grandfathered in when the new building codes went in, but if they get wiped out, they won't be able to meet those codes going forward. Some developer will pick it up for 1/3 the price now.
Woof. That's exactly what will happen.

so a friend of mine is currently headed to Charleston South Carolina for a wedding happening Saturday night for a friend that has been planned for over a year. I told him they were cutting it too close to be playing with fire like this but he promised they are leaving first thing Sunday morning well before the outer bands get close.
My question to him was what if you get caught in horrible evacuation traffic and run out of gas? What if you get stuck evacuating and you can't find a hotel etc etc. I get that it's a huge wedding and it's been planned for over a year and all, Just seems risky to put all your close friends and family In unnecessary danger. Do the storm experts on this board think that's a little bit nuts or am I just overthinking this?

Pinellas County, Just north of Tampa, has instituted a 6 am mandatory evac for level A. Level A is low lying, elderly, beach, and special needs people.
quote:Yes. It would have to make quite a large (and unexpected) shift to the west now for that area to be in any real danger except maybe from tornadoes.
Evacuating there seems excessive does it Not?

We found a room downtown at the double tree for Sunday-Tuesday . It wasn't easy but there are still some rooms available.
Edit: downtown jax that is.

I say that because the last few times the NHC has released these maps, they're often revised higher as the storm approaches.

Schools are closed in Charleston tomorrow. I wouldn't be shocked if Gov. McMaster announced evacuations today to start this weekend.
With that said, I'd go to the wedding.
