Storm surge with this storm is going to be unreal.
Not necessarily. It'll be really bad no doubt but unless it goes to the central gulf coast where the shelf is shallow, the surge will "only" be about 10-15 feet. Not a 25-35 ft surge.

Florida gonna Florida.

Would love to see the ensembles that have it fishing come to fruition. I just hope it doesn't wait until the Florida coast to make that turn and make direct landfall in Miami and SC.

My mother has a friend on St. Martin who is hunkered down and planning to ride it out.
I have a few friends that live there. They are going to ride it out at Porto Cupecoy Marina. Where is your mother's friend going to ride it out?
Talking to them today, I think they realize they should have gotten the frick out of there. I tried to tell them and offered them a place to stay.

People in Louisiana are freaking out over Irma. Wonder what they will do when Jose decides to show a similar path.

While people may focus on the 3 members west of Florida, it should also be noted there are even more members that take it fishing.
Noting something versus losing a house. I wonder what side people will err.

Why do people always go for bread when a hurricane is coming?
Bottled water, sure, although you can also just fill containers with tap water just the same.
If I was really worried about being stranded for a while, I'd go for canned goods and other non-perishable items.

The GA/SC coast has a shallow shelf. The storm surge potential here is not good.

Seriously?
Bread = sandwiches when there is no power/oven

How much would significant landfall in Cuba affect the accuracy of the models going forward?
It would seem to me with so much of the path dependent on the timing/interaction with that front, that landfall in Cuba may cause some havoc with the models.

Time to open our eyes to what is actually happening and not what the models say
Everyone along the gulf coast should be prepared - it is the heart of hurricane season after all.
That being said, what is "actually happening" is Irma is still roughly 5-6 days and 1500 miles SE of Key West.

Baw do you even baked beans in a cast iron over a fire?
Or is that too cavemanish for you?

These Cape Verde style storms tend to get horrifyingly powerful way out. I just reached out to a couple of our employees that work remotely in south Florida. They plan on making themselves scarce this weekend.

Joke’s on them, that bread will be stale by the time the storm hits
