If it ends up crossing FL and into the Gulf. It'll be hard for anyone to trust the models or forecasts again

May end up that a lot of prayers are answered.
Do prayers really change the course of a hurricane?

This thing is staying well offshore.
Until it gets Wilmington.
Those baws got rocked last year too

Is it likely to strengthen as it goes north? Or is the water too shallow/cool for it to get stronger?

Water is still well into the 80s all the way up to OBX.

The current wind map is showing you will get 40-50 sustained, with gusts a little higher. That is if it turns later. You've got that, standing on one foot.
Irma came almost directly over my house 2 years ago. In comparison, 40-50 would be a gentle breeze. Fortunately, all the utility lines here are underground. Although Irma caused there a lot of power outages, etc. in central FL, the lights never even flickered in the immediate area.

I don't think the problem is with the models. They are the same they have always been. They are imperfect for the long term and reliant upon the data they are given.
The problem is that there are many more eyes on those models. The fact that many of those eyes are under or uninformed and apparently incapable of critical thinking is the problem.
Contrary to popular belief, the models as a whole are better today than they have ever been and will be better tomorrow than they are today. People fail to realise the limitations of such things, and that is their fault alone.

Wow, really?
My MIL is The Villages-adjacent and lost power for a week. She was in rehab following back surgery and the facility booted her out, knowing she'd be going home to no power.
We drove over from the panhandle to pick her up.

Hope your MIL ended up OK. Yes, I fully realize my immediate area was among the most fortunate. I wouldn't want to live in a hurricane prone area that did not have underground utility lines.
The wind was so strong I did loose a Bismark palm. Checked my roof, and the roofs of 2 snow bird neighbors the next morning; none of us had even lost any shingles, etc. Made 2 families happy as they breathed sighs of relief when I called that all was well in their winter homes.

Dems were really hoping for this to hit a battleground state so that could create a FEMA crisis.
Is there anything you nimrods can't turn into a BS political subject?
