From my experience the Californians that move to Texas are conservative. I would imagine the kind of Californian that would willfully move to Alabama is even moreso.

I was about to ask. What are the bars like for people in Huntsville in their early-late 20s? Is there a popping downtown or any area where you can live and walk to bars? Not looking for a Dallas or Houston but how would it compare to San Antonio?

seems everyone is moving further and further out into suburbia

Harvest, Toney, Athens, New Market, Owens Cross Roads, Greenbriar, everywhere

name a road and it probably needs another lane in the next decade

Eh, I live in the country between Huntsville and Guntersville anyway.

one of the most underrated parts of the entire state if you value proximity to a cool city and a lake. I think the Hampton Cove area is coming up slowly, but it really needs a brewery on that side of the mountain IMO.

land over in Union Grove is tempting if the market ever goes down, for someone looking at trading suburbia for 10-15 acres down the line.

Compare a city of 200k to a city of 1.5 million?

I don't think you're doing this right.

My aunt and uncle moved from Orange County to Nashville as tax refugees. They are conservative but still super weird. Wouldn't want them as neighbors.

I've spent a decent amount of time in Alabama, and no way Huntsville is more desirable than the nice suburbs of Birmingham or Mobile. No way.

i was on my way to Huntsville over the weekend coming from Bucee's in Birmingham. went up 59 to 231. just before crossing the tennessee river, there's another small bridge where the 4 lane separates. i was going 80 in the left lane and a jeep wrangler in the right. we were side by side. then a BMW that was behind wanted to pass me in the median right before the bridge. as you might've guess, the BMW would've had to exceed my 80 mph to pass me.

well, this idiot almost ate the guardrail head on. dude had to swerve into my lane which in turn cause the wrangler to swerve onto the right shoulder. the dude's wife/gf was hanging outside of her window giving me the bird for i guess potentially ending her and her SO's life.

i guess it was my fault the driver pulled over into the median/shoulder to try to pass me.

my wife and i were visiting some friends, and overall, i liked the town. we've considered moving there when we decide to move back to AL from Indiana.

i'd hate to leave the company i work for though. i don't know what the retention rate is for draftsman/engineers in Huntsville when most of the employers are doing gov't contract work. i've looked into ERC, but not sure how i feel about them. we've considered the Fort Payne area since there is a division of Nucor there but that puts us on the other side of the lake.

I thought Nucor when you said Indiana and moving back to Alabama. I grew up in Fp. It's really nice area. Your basically 1hr from Huntsville 1 hr from Chattanooga and just over 1 hr from Birmingham. Plus you can be to Tennessee river in 30 minutes

Get out of the passing lane a-hole. Pass and get over into the right lane. You can take 65 north back to Indiana or south to Florida. Take it. Either direction.

I was trying to pass the wrangler. The BMW just happened to time it as I was side by side with the wrangler.

Regardless, you don’t try to pass from the median/shoulder like this dude did. He was the bigger idiot. Not me.

If you wanna do 90 in a 65, you can wait for me to pass and get back over in the right lane since I’m ahead of you.

no you can’t. 65 takes you to Mobile from Montgomery.

Now, I can take Taylor Rd from 85 in Montgomery and head down 231 south if you’d like, but that will only get me to the panhandle.

I'm sure the metro is a lot closer.

And San Antonio is a town full of retirees, military, and families so I wouldn't be shocked if the nightlife is about the same. Which is to say, pretty fun, but nothing compared to bigger citied.

Isn’t this just cherry picking? You can’t just point out the best parts of a city and compare that to the entirety of another city. Even if you live in one of those nice suburbs you still have deal with the rest of the city

it’s improved 1000% in the last 5-10 years and yes there is a vibrant downtown with a solid and growing bar and restaurant scene for the size city it is that one can live and walk to; however, it still isn’t going to compare to most large metro areas.

Then it should be titled:

" Best place to live in the US if you are poor".

If you are 5% or a 1%, you sure as hell aren't choosing to live in Huntsville. Again, its not a bad place at all and its nice. But its also no where near "best place to live in the US" if you aren't poor.

You think Huntsville doesn't have any 5% or 1%?

Tell the folks on Chapman Mountain, Green Mountain, and Monte Sano they don't want to live in Huntsville if they had a choice.

It's not, but the ranking wasn't really about the metro. It was about the city itself.
