Experts attribute the shift to traditional factors - such as high cholesterol and diabetes - but also to abuse of substances like marijuana and cocaine, which is increasingly common among younger heart attack sufferers.

The overall rate of cardiovascular events has dropped thanks to fewer people of all ages smoking cigarettes and more older people taking statins.

'It used to be incredibly rare to see anyone under age 40 come in with a heart attack--and some of these people are now in their 20s and early 30s,' said senior author Ron Blankstein, MD, a preventive cardiologist at Brigham and Women's Hospital.

'Based on what we are seeing, it seems that we are moving in the wrong direction.

'It's really important for us to understand why people are actually having heart attacks at a younger age, when there is even more productive life lost.'

The study included 2,097 young patients under the age of 50 who had been admitted to one of two large hospitals after suffering a heart attack.

We are in the middle of an obesity crisis in our country. It stands to reason that people's hearts are going to fail.

I wonder if the use of ADD and ADHD meds like adderall attribute to this? I would guess cocaine use would increase heart attacks for 20's and 30's.

Only a matter of time. People have been deceived about marijuana for so long.

Cocaine and marijuana have been around a long, long time. Why are they just now noticing this phenomenon? Sounds like they're reaching for unlikely explanations and ignoring the elephant in the room, literally.

Synthetic marijuana has been an issue I've seen quite a bit causing younger folks to have heart issues. Never seen an issue with regular ole dope.

Very true, but it also has a lot to do with stimulants imo. People drinking energy drinks/suped up coffee 3-4 times a day.

The cocaine bit is silly

No fricking way are younger generations consuming more than people did in the 70s-80s

Modern synthetic is fricking awful. It started out relatively similar to marijuana, but with each iteration being outlawed, it now has practically nothing in common. I've seen people act batshit on synthetic.

Oh yeah because marijuana and cocaine use are brand new.

What a load of shite.

It's the same reason colon cancer numbers are skewing younger. The old axiom you are what you eat is REALLY fricking true.

Most of us wouldn't have to go back more than 3 or 4 generations to find ancestors who worked jobs that required physically demanding activity all day, almost every day.

Compare that to the physical activity that most of us get now.
