Decent area or am I gonna get shot? Taking the wife to a concert at NRG in May but I’ve been told the NRG area isn’t safe. Looking at a hotel near the Toyota Center but is that a bad area too? Yes, I realize this is like asking what area of New Orleans is safe.
So NRG is well south of downtown. Apparently downtown used to be shady but over the years it’s drastically improved. Today it’s actually pretty nice. The only part with homeless people is under the bridge near Minute Maid.
To sum it up, yes the areas near Toyota center are safe and you won’t have any issues.

biggio’s sports bar in the marriott is a cool place
the hilton has a pappasito’s in it, marriott has xochi
the grove on discovery green is fancy

Downtown is unrecognizable today from the way it used to be in the late 90s/early 2000s.
If you worked Downtown, you got the frick out at quitting time, because the homeless hoards were moving back into the area to retake it at night.
But, there also wasn't a lot of shite keeping people around after work or drawing people in at nights and on the weekends like there is now with all the bars on Main St, Discovery Green, & restaurants near Minute Maid.

Compared to anywhere in BR or NOLA, it's like being in Switzerland safety wise.

ive stayed downtown and walked to and from the toyota center with no issue. there are a few bums hanging around especially around main street but not bad. way less than say canal street in new orleans.
We go often and this has been our experience as well

Going to see Ed Sheeran perform Galway Girls?
It was a Christmas present to my wife and I have no idea what Galway Girls is. Is that one of his songs? I enjoy his music too because he’s pretty talented but haven’t heard of that one.

Downtown by Minute Maid and the Toyota center it is not bad area, never felt unsafe. But there was also wall to wall people down there for the Shriner Children's Classic. But damn I think I would find something closer to NRG that area can't be that bad.

I would suggest Metro to and from.. Uber, Lyft and parking is quite the hassle lately at NRG.. they have been directing rideshares to the SW yellow lot so everyone from the concerts end up waiting in one area driving up cost and wait times (over an hour )

Have your Uber/Lyft/Alto go to the Holiday Inn by NRG...less of a cluster frick.

I remember as a kid going with my dad to that Chinese grocery to get a sandwich when that was the only worthwhile place in that area of/near downtown short of GRB.

All that being said, I still believe the Astros & Texans need to both relocate somewhere outside of the beltway. Like the Braves did.

That’s an awful take.
Enjoy the first downvote I’ve ever given someone here.

Residential around Minute Maid is growing like wildfire, even thru covid. It is one of the nicest downtowns in the southern/southwest US. The hotel area a few blocks away surrounding Discovery Green, Toyota Center and GR Brown is about as safe as a downtown area can get. There are tons of conventions and concerts that keep the area booming in addition to the Rockets and Astros.
Other than the Cubs or Red Sox, I can not think of one MLB franchise move that would be dumber than an Astros move.
