Company has booked my flight, hotel, and rental car, and I’m supposed to be going up there tomorrow. Logged into their career portal today and noticed that two days ago the position I’ve applied for has been closed but they’ve applied me for another position in the department. From what I can tell, this new position is far less technical/advanced than what I applied for, and again from what I can tell, looks like a step down from where I’m at even now. I asked the recruiter about it and he said it’s a very similar position they thought I’d be a great fit for.

Do I go up there and see what it’s all about, or do I go with my gut and say frick ‘em and let them eat their lost costs for never once mentioning this to me?

Is the pay equal?

If so:

Looks like you win here.

Don’t go. This is just some HR dude trying to cover his arse for buying you tickets. If it’s a step down then it is a step down. Thanks but no thanks.

Give it a look. You’re not obligated to buy
If the company is good it’s a way to get your foot in the door

PS Drawing conclusions from an HR web portal is not the same as being inside it. As someone else just wrote here - if you don’t go you’ll never know.

Roll the dice and impress them. You never know what will happen...but if you stay home nothing can happen.

I have made a bunch of companies make room for awesome hires. You never know.

Go listen to what they have to say. It may involve a substantial pay raise.

You should probably go through the interview and then ask them what the deal is.

No one here can help you.

Depends on your personal situation, imo.

Single or married w/no kids? No job? Hell yeah, you go and get to spend a day in a different city. They'll have to eat cost whether you go or not. You may even want to sign up for the other position.

They do that shite with cars too. They post one online that they don’t actually have in inventory on the lot, then show you their comps when you get there.

The fact that your recruiter knows anything about this is a big big red flag.

Of course.

Well that would be absolutely retarded

If you are good enough, they'll find a spot for you that meets your needs. If we have someone referred and they're good enough we make room for them even if we don't have an open req because finding good people is hard.

But based on you considering letting someone spend seemingly thousands of dollars on you and you considering skipping it when you don't really know what's going on, you probably aren't good people.

No it doesn't, unless you don't care about completely burning professional bridges for blurry reasons.

Where is it? I’d at least take a free trip to party if it’s in a cool place.

Even if they can't make room now, there is always the chance they remember you next time and give you a call later. I've done the same on the hiring end, and I've had people call me back a few months after an interview as well.

I'd only go if they agreed to give me the airline miles and the hotel and rental car frequent customer points.
