I'd still go, but skip the interview and enjoy the paid-for trip.
Seriously, do you want to work for a company that pulls a switcheroo like that without telling you? That's amateur hour stuff.

Just to clarify, the new job that I’m being offered based on what I can see from the job position would have been a job that I would have been qualified for directly out of college, and I now have over three years of progressive solid experience. The job I applied to would have been a step forward, or at the very least a step lateral. That, and the fact that no one ever mentioned that this was being done until I myself noticed it the day before my travel, is the biggest issue for me.

You’re a moron if you decide not to go based on what you’ve posted here

Could just be someone from HR fricking around not knowing what the frick they are doing. The HR department is worthless. Go and see what it’s all about if they’re paying for your shite.

It would most likely give me pause as well to have the position changed like that, but it seems like the only thing you really have to lose is some vacation days at your current job.

You’re overthinking it. Go, check it out. Then think it over.

I read something earlier this morning about recruiters being notorious for the ole bait and switch. Sounds like that is exactly what this is.

No he's not. They switched the job he's interviewing for without telling him. That's BS, and it's a bridge I'd gladly burn as I wouldn't want to work for a place that does that.
You can do it in a tactful, professional way though if that's the route you want to go.

Would be interested to know where he'd be flying to.
That being said, what the hell. I like checking out random new cities (unless it would require burning a day or two of vacation at the current job).

It's definitely fricked up, but that's not really on the company. They only know you are applying for X job, not that you were bait and switched. You can certainly tell them during the interview if that's in fact what happened, but just dipping on the whole situation, especially when they paid for this much travel, still looks really bad in my opinion

Recruiters love to call you about a job you applied for, then say they’re not hiring but have some shitty job they think “you’d be a great fit for”

or do I go with my gut and say frick ‘em and let them eat their lost costs for never once mentioning this to me?
Absolutely. Let your pride prevent you from getting a good job. Especially one that is paying for flight/lodging/rental car for your dumbass.
Oh wait, I forgot that youre 25 and have 3 years of job experience. frick them

What kind of company is paying your travel for an interview for an entry level position?
