Happened again in 1988, but it was done by a woman to kill her husband. Used other deaths that she caused to make it appear more random.
Kinda makes you think.

Who remembers this?
I was 12 at the time, and I kid you not EVERY TIME I hear "Tylenol" I think of this. It doesn't effect my usage of it on the rare occasion I take it, but there hasn't been one time since then that I don't think about it.
Point being, things that are drummed into kids that early as existential threats by the media are hard to get rid of. Keep that in mind...

a tablet coated with slick, easy-to-swallow gelatin but far harder to tamper with than the older capsules which could be easily opened, laced with a contaminant, and then placed back in the older non-tamper-proof bottle
was it determined that individual bottles were tampered with at each store or was this something that happened in the packaging facility?
I do remember this though

This is why they started putting the tamper proof foil seal on the bottle openings.

I get it and logically that means they thought the bottles were tampered with when reaching the stores

If I remember correctly, they arrested & eventually convicted a resident of NY for sending extortion letters to the makers of Tylenol. They could not prove in court that he was guilty of tampering with the bottles. It seems there was some circumstantial evidence but no proof. Dept. of Justice reportedly was convinced that James Lewis of NY was guilty. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison for extortion.

No, law enforcement has always worked on the theory that these bottles were bought, taken home, tampered with, and then returned to the stores.
Don’t remember the exact specifics, but there is some circumstantial evidence that rules out tampering at the manufacturing and distribution side of things.

Yep, I remember it. Mom went through the house and threw away all the Tylenol.

In 2060 they'll be a thread here about the 2021 Johnson & Johnson Covid vaccine murders.

Yeah, could've ruined the Tylenol brand but they reacted swiftly.

Same here. Every time.

The thought was someone was buying Tylenol, contaminating it, then returning it to the stores.

I was in boot camp and remember this vividly. People were afraid to take OTC meds, capsules specifically.

Taking medicine is cringe. Just do some push-ups that’d help you man up and not need medicine

Aha...I knew I remembered that from somewhere. I just thought it was a husband making sure his wife was one of the casualties.
How'd they catch the perpetrator in that case? Seems like it would be hard to link the tamperer with the product (at least in the days before cell phones and ubiquitous cameras).

I would argue the people that like gaucho posts don't understand good humor
