Consumer Reports gives the Wranglers 1 out of 5 for reliability, the lowest rating they give.
Toyota is CRs most reliable brand, Jeep is perennially in the bottom 5 out of 28.
Both Wranglers and FJs have very good resale due to their cult status.
I would not suggest a FJ for a first vehicle just because of the blind spots.
One thing to also keep in mind is that all vehicles are much more reliable than they were in the past but in current terms of reliability there is still a huge gap between a Toyota and a Jeep product.

Just went and test drive the FJ Cruiser during my lunch break. I have to say that I really like it. They put brand new tires and did a brake job on it. Called my insurance and waiting on a quote. May go with the FJ Cruiser.

Nope, I have same vehicle as you with only 63k on it. I'm on my 3rd transmission. It's spent 9 week's total at the dealership since I bought it.
My Jeep's from the 90s didn't have any issues. They were manuals though.

One must wonder why no real alternative to the jeep exists. Suzuki tried with the Samuri back in the 90s, but that's really been about it. Jeeps are in high demand, thus the retaining value. Why wouldn't Ford, Nissan, Toyota or Honda come up with a fun, open air vehicle that sits up from the ground? It doesn't have to be a off road warrior.

2014 Grand Cherokee owner here, 195k miles with normal maintenance and I have replaced the 200A Alternator.
Averaged 24.5 mpg (3.6L V6)
Been a wonderful vehicle but it’s fixing to be replaced.
As for the OP’s question, be the parent here and get the kid what YOU want to get him.
I’d get him a 4-6 year-old pickup truck.
He’s only going to tear it up and a Wrangler or FJ are the wrong vehicles for a boy to learn to drive on.

That was kind of my point. There were some bad batches, happens to every car maker. You should not make it sound like there is a 50/50 chance the engine is going to go out.
To the OP - buy used one from a Mom. Probably did nothing but drive to soccer practices and nail salons.

My wife’s Cherokee is not even 2 years old and it shuts down on her as she is driving down the road. Cranks back up after you get it stopped and the dashboard light will go off. Have a warranty and have taken it in, but they said they can’t do anything unless the sensor light is on, so they can tell what is wrong.
They advised her when the light comes on the dash, pull it over, get it towed to dealership (at our expense)with the car still running where they can hook up their machines to it.
Total garbage.

Hit or miss. I've had friends with Jeeps have non-stop issues, I've also had friends who haven't had any outside of your usual maintenance stuff.
My opinion on Jeep is similar to VW: they can be good, but when they're bad, it's hell.

That is a dealership issue though. I would try a new one. When the CEL goes off, the codes do not automatically clear. They have to cycle out or be cleared with a OBD tool.

It seems like people with jeeps say no issues and people without jeeps say they are crap. I would assume its in the middle like most other cars. The wildcard being how you drive it. Best friend and I had the same model F150 FX4 in high school. He drove like a bat outta hell and replaced tires, transmissions, and all kinds of other stuff. I just drove mine normally and sold it at 15 years of age and 200K miles. Had to replaced the fuel pump.

I have had a Jeep in my household since 1990.
We have one now. We use it like a Jeep should be used. It's flawless.

My first vehicle was a Jeep Cherokee Sport. After owning it for five years, it had so many issues that I finally gave up and traded it in. I didn't take it off-roading and was diligent about keeping up with the maintenance. I would only get another Jeep as a secondary vehicle to mess around with on the weekends.
