How reliable are Jeeps?

I need to get my son a vehicle for his 16th birthday and I am thinking about buying him a Jeep. I am looking at a 2015 Jeep Wrangler Sport 2 door with hardtop. It has 45,000 miles on it. Do Jeeps crap out before 100K miles? How reliable are Jeep Wranglers?
I am also considering a used FJ Cruiser but would have to get an older one with more miles to keep it in the budget.
I know the FJ Cruiser is more reliable but he wants a Jeep and I like that you can take the top off when the weather is nice. Hell if we get the Jeep I might trade with him every once in a while.

Not reliable at all being honest. I swear my buddies with Jeeps work on them more than they get driven
Get him a 2wd Tacoma

They’re shite. Anything Chrysler is shite.
If you’re willing to put up with constant repairs, go for it. The Wrangler is otherwise a fun ride.

Not that great.
I owned a '02 Grand Cherokee and had nothing but issues with it. The electric fan kept going out and there is no dash light to tell you until your engine overheats and dies.

You are a cool parent, but those things break all the damn time.

Horrible...
Co-worker bought a 2015 JK with a blown engine about 2 years ago. His son blew the new engine in about 18 months. In between, there was a myriad of drive train issues.

if used
Look at nissan xterra, fj, 4 runner
If he is mechanical and likes to work on cars then a jeep is ok

Not saying this isn't true but comments like this may need a little more context.
A lot of those guys working on their Jeeps all of the time are also tearing them up offroad.

Jeeps are great as second cars for guys that like to tinker.
If your kid needs reliable transportation - consider something else.

The bad thing about the FJ are the blind spots. You can't see shite out of that thing. That being said I would buy an FJ in a heartbeat over a Jeep.

Not reliable at all if you're using them as they were intended. Great excuse to buy a massive amount of tools and a welding machine.

You better check his insurance rates before you make that purchase.

I don't know about long term reliability on newer Jeeps but they do hold their value. I have about 90,000 on my '13 JK and the only problem I've had is the damn sensors. They can shut you down and it sucks.
Also... They leak. At some point, if you take the top/doors off, it's pretty much guaranteed. Hopefully you're lucky and it doesn't leak over the radio or dash.
That being said, I love mine. Don't get an FJ.

Looks like most common "repair" on a 2015 Wrangle is a water leak by the A-pillar
The probability of a repair being a severe or major issue is 15% for the Jeep Wrangler, compared to an average of 10% for compact SUVs and 11% for all vehicle models.

I've had 2 Jeep's. I love them. Just don't use them for towing. I haven't had a single problem (knock on wood) with my 2013 Wrangler. It has 42k miles. A 2015 Wrangler seems a little much for a kid unless you got a lot of money to blow lol

I've had several Jeeps and had no problems. If they were such pieces of shite, why are their retail market so high for used ones? Why do you see used jeeps selling for 15k+ for a vehicle with over a 100k miles on it? You're going to have your jeep lovers, who swear by them, and your jeep haters which most on this board are like for some reason. Buy your son a jeep, he'll enjoy the hell out of it.

These answers are what I expect from the OT.
Jeeps are fine and reliable. They are also extremely easy to work on if something goes wrong. Parts are very cheap and the Jeep community is one of the best in all the automotive world.
I have had a 1987, 2001 and 2016 Wrangler.

HE’ll love it. You’ll hate paying for the repairs tho

I owned 3 of them from 08 to 2016 and didn't have a problem with any of them. Had a new engine put in the 08 b/c when I got oil changed they forgot plug.. 1 day later boom. But other than that they were all fine. If you get a jeep, you have to figure in tinkering.. It's just part of jeep ownership. ??
