Because they're objectively unreliable. Don't get me wrong, Jeep Wranglers are awesome vehicles for what they were intended for. Probably the best, right up there with pre 2004 Land Rover Discoveries. Both are giant pieces of shite, though that are going to need constant attention unless you're lucky.
I find that most people that think that their GM or Chrysler products are reliable have never owned anything else. Once you own a truly reliable vehicle, like pretty much anything out of Japan, you never look at two of the Big Three or anything out of Britain, the same way again.

Bottom line is this, 97% of the driving public should be driving some kind of Japanese vehicle. Two of the remaining 3% should by themselves an F-250 or F-350 for whatever working or hauling that they do on a daily basis. Naturally, The 1% are going to drive Porsches, Audis, BMWs and Mercedes because they can afford the initial cash outlay and the subsequent cost of repairs to enjoy the best engineered vehicles on the planet though not necessarily the most reliable

You can find all kinds of fun, reliable cars for half your budget. Grab him an old Subaru WRX Wagon for 7 or 8 grand. It'll have 100k and probably last another 100 on top. Plus he won't be driving a Sorority Mobile.

Did you just call a Jeep Wrangler a Sorority mobile but then turn around and suggest that I get him a Subaru Wagon which is known as the vehicle of choice for Lesbians?

I own a 2008 FJ, we call it the JefFJ. I love it and it is just hitting 100K miles. No complaints at all.
The brand new Chrysler Pacifica had to go into the shop with only 5K miles on it so they gave me a 2018 JK Wrangler to drive for 3 days. I WAS NOT impressed.
Don't get me wrong, it was fun to drive. But it drove like a Jeep and you could watch the gas gauge move when you accelerate from 0-70 getting on the interstate (we have stop lights at our on ramps in Washington).
I was happy to get my FJ back (my wife was driving it while I had the loaner). The Toyota engine and feel of the vehicle is completely different. Test drive them both. Everyone has a Jeep, but there are only a few FJs out there and Toyotas are very dependable.

I test drove the FJ Cruiser today. It has 104K miles on it and I was very impressed with it.

That's a lot of miles. And you wonder why it is alot cheaper than the wrangler lol. Both are gas guzzlers and are too much for a 16 year old. They will wreck it. A mid-2000 Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic would be better for a beginner

White, hard top 4 door Wrangler is the most owned car by sorority girls, complete with 10-12 decals on the back windows.
Lesbians drive Subaru Outbacks; they have enough room for all 3 dogs plus moving a 1 bedroom apartment.
I suggested getting him a WRX wagon, a turbocharged 5 speed with just enough space for him to stow 2-3 friends or a little bit of junk. Has the cool car bonafides to drop some panties and the AWD and safety record to keep your insurance premium low.

On the first page it was mentioned the poor visibility of the FJ. It is 100% correct. That is my wife's biggest complaint. Your son will have to be very cognizant of everything around him on the road and do a lot of head twirling when he is backing up. When I was teaching my son to drive it we did multiple loops around the parking lot in reverse so he would understand the nuances of the large blind spots. Just a tip if you go with the FJ. I have been driving it for 10 years and do not have a problem with the blind spots at all.

Bought the first Black Sahara 4 dr in my region. 07 model, purchased in 06 ($29k) Drive it for about 8 years until I started liking m series Bmw. Saved the Jeep for my boy. Fast forward, dec 4, 2018 and he gets the 07 jeeep with 167k miles on it. Never any real problems with it. None. Fast forward Dec 14, 2018. Ten days after license. Totals said trouble free Jeep. He’s fine. Asks for forgiveness. State Farm gives me $18.7k on the damn thing. Would do again. He’s in an Audi with safety sensors and airbags everywhere now. Loved that Jeep.

Had a '98 Grand Cherokee in high school and part of college. There wasn't a time where it went more than 2 months without something going wrong on it/breaking down. Granted, I acquired it at 170,000 miles and rode it to 200K. But still it's not like they were cheap fixes either. The interior was pretty nice though.
Fortunately my parents covered all the costly expenses, and if you get your son a jeep, you can become that parent!

The old 90s jeep cherokees are one of the most reliable vehicles ever built. Have no clue about the new ones, but I can tell you that if Chrysler builds it the odds are great that it's a piece of shite.

My gauge cluster failed on my 2008 Wrangler back in 2016. Couldn’t crank it, if you turned on the switch the windshield wipers and lights came on, couldn’t take it out of gear, etc. That was a mess to get fixed.
Fixed it and then sold it and got a Tacoma.

Had one for a few years. Tons of issues — mostly with the emissions system. “Fixed” multiple times but never really stopped occurring.
Sold it in November and haven’t missed it. Honestly.

I bought a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Worst car I ever owned. I hope the new ones are better than that! Traded it in on the clunkers deal.
