I’ve always heard they had reliability issues but there’s a helluva lot of them on the roads around here. Wouldn’t people stop buying them if they couldn’t keep them running?

Still got my 99 Dakota. It needs a new head gasket @ 99k miles
It's at my dads house and he uses to go to lumber yard and refuses to take in to be fixed. I gave up and figured it's his now

terra is one of the absolute worst vehicles made in the last 20 years. Buy one if you want to pay for a new transmission.
Have you ever owned one? I have and have a pro4x now. They are built on truck frame, have a beefy engine and tranny- I have no idea where you got your information-
The real downside to the Xterra is it is geared for offroad and it sucks gas
I also owned jeeps- pre 2000 The jeep when it was a jeep with an inline 6 was a great indestructible engine
When Chrysler started the MFGing and dropped in their engine - it is only the same name and look - not mechanically equaly

Oh yeah. What do you suggest that I buy for my son? Just curious.

Tacoma if you’re a cool dad
Corolla if you’re not a cool dad

Just get him a Carrolla/Camry or civic/accord
Truth. And if that’s not good enough then he can get a job and buy what he wants.

I was originally looking for a Tacoma but can't find one that I like for under $20K.

You better check his insurance rates before you make that purchase.
Does a higher center of gravity make them a bigger rollover canidate?
If so a bad mix with a 16 year old.

Hyundai Accent or similar. Something inexpensive, reliable, cheap to maintain, and won't be difficult to replace once the inevitable dings start to occur.

Son Has a 2010 Wrangler that has been pretty good....until the motor blew up with less than 90,000. Fun ride though.

If my kid abused a car he was given, then he wouldn't have a car--much less a cool car. And many kids who haven't had to pay for a car aren't going to respect it. You seem more the exception in that case.
ETA: I was handed a '70s Chevy tank of a car when I started driving around '92. I was just glad to have a car to drive instead of the bus and so were my friends who needed a ride.

It's a Chrysler product.
Run.
Run away fast.

Not saying this isn't true but comments like this may need a little more context.
A lot of those guys working on their Jeeps all of the time are also tearing them up offroad
True but it doesn't change the fact that anything made by Chrysler is a giant piece of shite. You can usually throw GM products in there too.

Don't hesitate to get one. Most of the people posting have never owned one, and their answers are predictable.
