$100K aint a lot of money anymore, especially if OP is still raising kids of his own. I’m not saying $100K is poor….but its also not rich enough to be funding vacations for someone else’s family of 5

I mean, we want to help advise you in this complicated matter here. But you’re giving us nothing to work with.

The only way I’d give them money towards that vacation was if I could pass it off as a Christmas gift and that would spare me from shopping for the whole bunch. And I would gift enough for them to buy some souvenirs on the trip but that’s about it.

It would be awesome for you to contribute to a young couple's and young kid's Disney trip. Tell them this is their Christmas gift and you'd rather help them make memories with the kids than to give them physical gifts. I see nothing wrong with what you are proposing.
What I would see wrong is if the family is asking. But according to your post, they are not asking, you just want to help them out. Awesome for you! Fawk the haters, don't let anyone tell you how to spend your own money.
As far as how much I would contribute, it depends on how much money I have. It could be a couple hundred or over a couple thousand...it just depends on you.
If I'm the young couple, I would be trilled with as little as $200 which could pay for a nice dinner or two for the family. Or I'd be thrilled with you giving each kid $100-$200 for souvenirs.
Or, you can help pay the trip cost by gifting $1,000-$2,000.

What I'm getting at is that if his wife makes decent money, if she wants to give some of it to her family, she should have that option.

don't think so. would be shitty of them if they expected me to help them pay for a luxury.
In OP's case, they haven't asked for anything. I think there is some poor reading comprehension by lot of posters ITT

The amount of money isn’t the issue in my mind.
Wife is retired now but made 7 figures 4 of the last 5 years.
I’m thinking in terms of the precedent this sets. But I am all for being generous.
I think paying half is the right decision, and making it their Christmas gift.
Based on the 4+ pages of comments, most are saying to give zero. That won’t fly at this point.
I do appreciate the comments and input given.

Good answer. Its a gift from yall to them im not sure why half the thread seems to think they are asking you for help paying for their vacation.

All good suggestions. This board can be weird at times. If the wife wants to make this a christmas gift for family she is close with I dont see why anyone has an issue with that.

A bad precedent isn't set if you tell them you want the kids to experience Disney while they are young and you're making it their Christmas gift this year. Explain your stance and don't leave them interpreting something else.

Given them money to fund their vacation that the planned and the husband worked towards, could cause a rift between your wife and the husband. I give them $50 per kid and ask them to let the kids pick out something from the shops on you.

Buy them this, and tell them to rough it and go camping. It builds character.

for 2 people, it can be done for 3,500 on a 4 day weekend.
Hit up one of the value resorts and you are looking at about $3k for 4 nights at the resort, 4 park tickets, table-service dining plan, and the memory maker for your entire trip

Disney has changed, on purpose. to draw on a different demographic. Where once it was a destination for Joe middle class to take the rug rats, they raised the prices significantly to discourage them and brings in few, but wealthier, people. Smaller crowds to deal with, fewer ratchet fights, make more money.
Per Grok:
Sample ranges for the full trip (tickets + hotel + food + basics, excluding airfare)
Budget$2,500–$4,000 Value or off-site hotel, mostly quick-service food, quieter dates, limited extras
Mid-range$4,000–$6,500 Moderate resort, mix of dining, some Lightning Lane
Premium$7,000+Deluxe resort, more table-service/character dining, higher-demand dates, more add-ons

$10,000 disney vacation is ridiculous. even her husband makes decent money for his age (I am assuming $120-150k minimum if she is a SAHM), $10k is way too much for a single vacation. Tell them to rent a condo in Destin for $3k and call it a day

quote:You posted a lot of information about them, but you didn't post the important information about you and your wife.
Here’s the background.
Wife’s (no pics) niece (no pics) and her husband and 3 kids are going to Disney World for a vacation in January. Niece is staying at home mom and she and her husband are upper 20s. All 3 kids are Disney age. We are very close to this niece and her family. Niece’s husband has a good job for someone in their 20’s.
Wife informs me tonight she wants to pay for part of the vacation.
In case you haven’t heard, Disney is not cheap. I’m not a fan of big gifts, but if the vacation is $10K-ish, what would you be comfortable giving?
How much can you give without it bothering you financially?
How much can your wife give without it bothering her financially?
Is this even a joint financial question?
Some folks would have trouble giving $20 to close family. Other folks would have no trouble giving $20,000 to close family.
Whatever you do, I wouldn't give $X in cash. Depending on how much you want to give, you can pay for the trip, pay for a percentage of the trip, pay for the lodging, pay for the admission, pay for the meals, pay for a day, pay for a dinner.
