Depends on your habits and how much you want to leave the kids. I’ve had my mortgage paid for 5yrs, my youngest of 5 has moved out. When my retirement reaches 3M, in the next 5yrs at this rate, I’ll tell my company eff you!

Living comfortably is not FU money. Anyone with FU money could bankrupt you for fun with your measly 5mm.

Realistically, my baseline would be $10 million, I think I could do everything I wanted to and buy everything I needed, easily, for the rest of my life.

Whatever the amount is where nothing you want to do or buy is limited by available funds and doesn’t require any type of loan or financing. You own everything free and clear and banks fear losing your business rather than have leverage on you.
Basically it’s the point where people go out of their way to please you out of fear of losing your business because they heavily rely on it for their own success

In Louisiana? A cool 5mil to your name would probably qualify. Assuming you aren’t pissing it away on a bunch of nothing and actually saving it for when you need to send an “FU” signal, you’re golden.

Hell in my circles it’s $40+ an hour

It is more situation dependant than people probably think. Being independent and controlling of your own affairs while not being overextended financially can change the number considerably.
Doug Stanhope is probably one of the better examples. He's arguably the most uncancelable comedian in the world today, but his net worth doesn't even begin to approach others in his business. He owns everything to do with his content and personally finances all his specials, recordings, and podcasts. Bought a house in the desert and doesn't owe on it. He may even book his own gigs now and has the dedicated following that he can tour when he wants.
What you have to lose and how many people are in a position to take it from you moves the needle on that number.

plays a big part in my thought on FU money. If you can lose everything through legal fees trying to protect yourself (whether legit or not) then its not FU Money

Any amount that allows you to live comfortably without having to answer to anyone. I am already there at 56.

It's not about how much money you have, but how much you need to live. We live pretty simply with very few bills so my "f you" amount isn't really that high.

Thats no F You money. In fact, thats the opposite of F You money.

I generally think $10M liquid is where money is really no longer a concern of any kind. You could put it in 30 year T-Bills and earn $500K annually.

The point is, I can walk away from my job tomorrow because I don't require a lot to live. I have a paid off home and a decent net worth. I don't need 10MM to support a life that makes me happy.

It's not that I didn't understand what you said, its just that it answered a different question. I understood it perfectly fine.

You’re more than likely still dealing with TSA with a 5 million net worth. So I would say probably not FU money. I’d put the figure at 10-15 million minimum if you have a family of 4.

It depends. To me, F you money is enough not to work and to afford LSU season tickets. I don't require anything else
