A 10-year-old dog is pushing it to spend that much on but you never know how long it can make it.
I have a 17-year-old dog. If he gets sick, sadly it will be time to let him go
My wife has a 17-year-old parrot that can live to 80. If the bird gets sick, I fear my wife would be willing to spend more on the bird's medical bills than she would on mine.

No right answer to this other than there is some minimum level you need to be willing to pay (regular vet care, stitches for cut paw, etc.). I've replaced 4 hips, 6 ACLs, and had one spend almost 2 weeks in ICU only to pass.

I can’t imagine spending more than $200 to adopt a pet unless it’s something exotic like a Tiger.

My dog was "accidentally" poisoned somehow with rat poison and we had to rush him to the LSU Vet center. They basically said they caught it early enough to save him if we want to pay for it. If not, they would just put him down. He was only 6 at the time and I couldn't just let him die so we paid about $5k all together on his medical bills and had to drop about half of it right then and there before they treated him. I'm glad we were in a position to do that and have since gotten pet insurance.

Just dropped $7k for my 12 yr old Lab yesterday for radiation treatment on squamous cell carcinoma on tip of nasal plenum. Also $6500 for full hip replacement when he was 18 mo old…how much is relative to what you’re able to provide. He is otherwise perfectly healthy.

My DIL is an exotic animal vet. She said someone dropped 5,000.00 on a sick oldish bunny. Good grief. I dont get it.

I once spent over $200 to save a fish. I was in a large enough city at the time to have a vet that actually did a lot of fish. It was a Red Sea Chaetodon semilarvatus (golden or blue-cheeked butterflyfish), over 8" long, and the wholesale price on them at the time was about $650. More importantly, it was a really hardy specimen that ate well. Butterflyfish are sometimes hard to get to eat, and the semilarvatus is known to be picky.

Wife’s is 14 years old. Prepare thy anus if you don’t set a hard $ limit. They certainly don’t get cheaper with age. He is mostly blind and mostly deaf, but still hanging on. His last vet visit was 2 years ago, and there will be no more unless something comes up where he is in pain / has a stroke or something and needs to be put down.

Purchase price of the pet is a minor consideration. Cost of feeding caring and keeping the pet healthy is where the costs are, plus the impact on your lifestyle.
Like to travel? Boarding fees.
Pet requires more than basic brushing and washing? Grooming fees.
Large dogs? Backyard is toast.
I mean, speaking from experience, think it through. Vet bills can be enormous, especially if you have an overly emotional spouse who thinks they're her fur babies.

Spent $4K on a cat we took to LSU Vet School as a last resort only for the cat to die 2 weeks later. They kept running the bill up on various test knowing the cat didn't have a chance. Of course it was my fault for agreeing to all of that.
