She had a heat stroke. We'd kept her in the shade and gave her water but I guess being a inside dog with a big coat didn't suit her. Her temp was 108 and she was already bruising up from her blood vessels breaking down when we got her to the hospital. The vet took us in a room and said she probably wouldn't make it but, for $5k they could try. That's a lot of money. Even if the kids hadn't been there I probably still would have said go ahead. The last time I cried was putting down another pet and I didn't wasn't to do that again.
I have to hand it to the UGA Vet School. They did a fantastic job bringing her back from the edge of death. She's fine now. Maybe a little dumber, but healthy as can be.

You said a pet.
Fish aren't pets. Fish are lamps you have to feed.
Dogs are pets.
Cat's are kinda pets even though if you asked them they'd deny it.
Birds are pets to a certain degree.
As far as how much?
For me, it's more than most of you baws would think is reasonable. I don't have kids. I have a golden retriever that is awesome. He's the best dog on planet earth. So I will spend whatever is required to keep him healthy and happy.

I personally would not spend money on a vet for a fish.
I am also the same person who spent $8k on a pound dog to have his gall bladder removed.

I need another basset because my bloodhound is getting too old to play with my young basset who's very atypically fast and energetic.
Smallest price ive seen on a pup is 1500. Its gone way up. Bloodhounds about the same.
Going to have to shop around for a 1 or 2 year old that needs a home like I did w my last one, he was 150$ w toys treats and a crate.

I have an English Bulldog who runs the house. I would eat A LOT of rice and beans to keep our baby girl alive and in good health. She was $3500 as a puppy.
The decision to get her was not taken lightly and honestly we waited decades to responsibly own a pet with children who played sports for years and the busy lives that led to.
This answer is relative. What is an exorbitant amount to some is spendable to others.
But she’s been therapy also. Between the final kid moving out for college and my mom passing away all within a rather short period of time, I honestly don’t know how I could have made it thru some heavy days if I didn’t have my faith, my spouse, and that dog.
