How much is too much for a pet?

Tl;dr have a koi pond in my yard and seems like one of the fish is sick. Some AI and reddit suggests low probability of survival long term but haven’t had a vet check it out.
Fish is considered a specialist case so not sure I want to drop thousand plus on this. Thoughts?

We have a dog that we spent a grand on to get...then dropped $6k on emergency vet and surgery. I told my wife that dog had reached it's lifetime out of pocket max. God bless it if something else happens to it.

Never take your kids to the vet ER when your dog is sick. I dropped $5k on my dog because I didn't want my kids to start crying.

I would have said probably 10k but I’m over 20k for my adopted Great Dane and if we had to spend 5k tomorrow we probably would unless it was more than likely terminal(cancer type treatments) or he wasn’t going to be the same with mobility type issues.

Take the sick one and throw it away or something. You don't want it to spread that shite to the other fish. People bring fish to a vet?

If it's an otherwise healthy animal and it has a blockage or something that can be easily fixed, you'd have to be a real cold-hearted bastard to not get it help or put it down. Especially a family pet like that.

That was 2 emergency vet bills 12 months apart. Aspirated phenomena and bloat. Not going to kill my dog over stuff that’s treatable. Had to spend about 3k when I adopted him to get rid of heartworms and other issues.
