This may have been mentioned, but I only read the OP......
I know someone in the field..... The staff lawyers get paid on the amount of business they bring in and cases they settle/win.
Many young lawyers want a definitive paycheck and don't want to work for commission. The firms actually have trouble recruiting "hungry" lawyers. But the money is there if you want it.
The owners or faces of the firms do very well.

The "middle class" is being removed from car accident PI.
You could just about say this about every profession other than nursing. And maybe banking.

It takes more than 43 hours to bill 43 hours. Especially at the larger firms with more hands touching files.
Not PI but i know a girl working for a big firm in NOLA . She bills 60hrs a week and MAYBE works 35-40 hrs. she is billing insurance companies.

Most of the billboard lawyers have a bunch of junior attorneys who do the actual work.

He died. Wife took over. Let’s just say, she doesn’t have a business mind.
You're clueless.
She never took over and had no interest in taking over.
The business was pretty much closed by the time he passed because it's located in a shithole where the residents have target practice at each other ever night. Covid finished it off.
Dumbass.
