This was my point in my previous post. Not all HOAs are created equal.

If you don't mind, how much cash are you throwing away on fees each month?

yes, it is worth it...actually what you are doing is paying someone to tell your neighbors what they can do on their property.

The oddest request I ever heard at a homeowner's association was a guy that wanted people with cats to put leashes on them went they went outside. He was mad because cats were getting into his garage and peeing there. He ended up having to move out after one of the cat owners watched him for a few days, and realized he was leaving his garage door open during the day as he ran a business out of his condo. People were coming, and going all day long. They were picking up and delivering things to him all day. The homeowners association told him his business was against policy, and he had to shut it down.

It's not going to go up... Your property value is going to stay stagnant in a subdivision, and that's IF the market stays consistant. I'm not going to be miserable in my own home for 15 years because I MIGHT lose 5 grand in property value over that time period. Well worth it IMO. The flood skyrocketed my property value, so I'm well ahead at this point anyway.
This is all sorts of wrong.

Yes.

I really haven't given it much thought.

With 24 lots...it isn't exactly an obtrusive situation.

When your house you paid 850k for now valued at 1.4M in under 3 years backs up about an acre off the most private part of your country club golf course?

Yes. Next question.

We have a voluntary HOA, our dues go toward paying for extra police patrols, mowing the medians, etc. Any calls or requests about neighbors not mowing their yards (which is usually an empty home and the owner doesn't live in the area) are told to contact the parish (ie: the HOA doesn't get involved).

Nah, man. It really depends on the HOA, how much you have to pay them, and what you get in return.

Not all HOAs are created equal

Personally, when I bought I made sure not to look at anything with an HOA. Haven't had any problems and my homes value has went up $80k in 5 years.

Different strokes
Don't get me wrong, I think you and i are on the same page about whatever works for you, that's fine.

I'm not saying anyone who doesn't want an HOA is a miserable person. But I am sticking with my statement that anyone who automatically thinks living in an HOA neighborhood would make them miserable is probably already a little miserable to begin with.

I’ll sacrifice some personal freedoms to make sure I keep the value of my house. If I ever get tired of it, I can sell my house and move out to the country

Imagine actually thinking that's the logic of having an HOA.

I buy the home I like. If it has an HOA then so be it.
If you let an HOA keep you away from a beautiful home then you are a derp.

I agree with this; however, I refuse to live in gated or platitudinous neighborhoods. Typically, these go hand and hand with HOAs.

Been in our house with an HOA for 17 years. They're only bad when there are over zealous retirees on the board. We went a couple of years with a guy on the board that would send letters over the most trivial things because he had nothing else to do with his time. He was replaced and I haven't heard a peep out of the HOA since.

My husband is the president of our tiny HOA. He was sort of unanimously appointed, not elected.

Our HOA handles landscaping in the common areas & dealing with the ponds. It’s very inexpensive. The only time someone complained about a neighbor’s yard, it was a legit complaint.

I love how this board makes HOA's out to be some sort of gestapo group. I've lived under two different HOA regimes and have done stuff to both houses without anyone's approval. I don't even know how to get in contact with the HOA in my current neighborhood. It has zero impact on my life or my house unless I wanted to keep an RV in my grass for a few weeks. I'm pretty sure the HOA just organizes food truck nights once a month at the park which is fine by me
