I would rather have 10 trashy neighbors than have a group of uptight, entitled pricks tell me what I can and can't do with my property.

why? what are you doing (or want to do) in a subdivision that an HOA won't allow?

In the one where I have my retirement plans we have our own roads, gated access, and a private boat ramp. Plus two pools and a clubhouse.

That's like being ok with police brutality because you "never break the law".

no, it's not. not even a little bit.

most people in the suburbs don't want their neighbors to have a pig farm or keep 10 cars in the yard.

I'm not a fan of them in general. Like property taxes, they mean you never truly own your home.

If you don’t like it it’s because you can’t afford it

Asking a question like "if you're not doing anything wrong what do you have to worry about" is exactly the same thing

not when you're voluntarily agreeing to covenants. it's an awful comparison.

You mean like the whole social contact thing? :

You don't choose to live or visit certain jurisdictions? Weird.

it's absolutely fine if you don't want rules, go live in the country on some acreage

but the bellyaching over not being able to park cars in your yard, build an ugly shed in the front yard, etc. in a Woodlands subdivision, for example, is pretty stupid

1) you have options.
2) you were talking about submitting to police brutality. that's not comparable to HOAs whatsoever.

Except in a hoa situation you buy property and they control what you can or cannot do to your own place

Communism is a better comparison. The commune takes your property rights
