We do. They cut my grass (weekly) and trim all bushes, Keep flower beds straight, weed eat, bla bla bla.
They tell me what color I can paint my house, (beige), what color my roof must be (brownish gray), when I can put out my trash (morning of trash pickup), If I walk my dog or cat, it must be on a leash - I have never seen anyone with a cat on a string, but I guess it could happen. I can't park a car on the grass in my front yard. No more than two vehicles in garage and two on the driveway, unless they are visitors/party. Can't shoot geese in our lakes, No one but homeowners and guests can fish in lakes.
Love it - none of the rules for the things they control bother me at all. I carefully reviewed them before I made an offer on our house, so we went in with eyes open.

no, it's not. not even a little bit.
most people in the suburbs don't want their neighbors to have a pig farm or keep 10 cars in the yard.
Y'all are incompetent when it comes to reading comprehension.
Regardless of whether I agree with this point or not, it was absolutely a relevant comparison.
The IDEA that you don't need to worry about an HOA because you're not doing anything wrong is exactly like the comparison he made to it.
The desire to have an HOA, as you just responded to him with, is not an equivalent argument against his point.

Except in a hoa situation you buy property and they control what you can or cannot do to your own place
Communism is a better comparison. The commune takes your property rights
When you are looking to buy a house. It is voluntary to choose the house in the hoa. It pools (pun intended) resources for the group of people living there going towards beautification of the common areas as well as entertainment with small get togethers, pools, tennis courts, playgrounds and their upkeep. As part of the contract you have to obey certain rules meant to maintain the image of the rest of the group and property values of said group.
Much like a fraternity goes towards pooling resources to maintain a common gathering place with a house, entertainment with parties. As such you must obey certain rules and dress codes meant to maintain the image of the group towards the outside and aiding in their value towards employers and the opposite sex with sororities.

not when you're voluntarily agreeing to covenants. it's an awful comparison.
You're making a separate point.
Nobody said you shouldn't be able to be part of an HOA, they're just expressing why they wouldn't personally buy a home that was subject to an HOA.
I think most people on this forum would defend anybody's right to enter into a voluntary contract.

So is joining a commune.
People willingly cede their rights for perceived security and conformity.

Because some people choose to have more control over their own property. Why do you have an issue with this?
Nobody's saying that there should be a law passed against HOAs. People are just expressing their own personal opinions of them. To each his own. Different Strokes for different folks. There's an arse for every seat. Etc.

police brutality is unjust and involuntary
HOA is the opposite

Agree
It's just another layer of governance though.

Why do you have an issue with this?
if you read these threads, it's obvious a lot of people have some serious problems with them and i don't get that at all.

I'm not going to be miserable in my own home for 15 years because I MIGHT lose 5 grand in property value over that time period.

Again, no clue what you're talking about.

If you brought up living in an HOA to anybody out in the real world, it would be such a boring conversation that the subject would get changed in about 3 minutes. Because nobody gives a shite. It is what it is. You buy a house that you like, find out it has an HOA in the neighborhood, whatever. You pay your dues and hopefully participate in the meetings to discuss issues.

When I purchased my first house many years ago it was a brand new house and one of the first houses in a new up and coming neighborhood. I was indifferent about HOA's at the time and figured I would be good either way. No HOA was ever established. After a few years the market crashed and the neighborhood slowly started to decline. The yard parkers steadily increased and I thought about opening up a small engine repair shop in my garage because it seemed like nobody in the neighborhood had a working lawn mower. This house was fine for me when I was single but after getting married and having a couple of kids I figured it was time for us to move on. After a couple of days on the market a rental company made a full price offer and we jumped. We bought a cookie cutter house in a cookie cutter neighborhood a few towns over and could not be happier. We have a great and strict HOA that keeps the yard parkers out and makes sure that lawns are properly maintained. The way I see it is that the HOA is protecting my investment and I am fine with that.

I blame all of this on mobile homes. Trashy rednecks that actually have a real home will let their house go to shite because they'll still be able to say that at least it's not a trailer.

Nah, man. It really depends on the HOA, how much you have to pay them, and what you get in return.
Not all HOAs are created equal
Personally, when I bought I made sure not to look at anything with an HOA. Haven't had any problems and my homes value has went up $80k in 5 years.
Different strokes

I have an incredibly expensive HOA, still doesn’t do shite, got asswipes doing hood rat shite anyway, if I could do it all over again I would have bought an enormous amount of property an made my own hoa
