How do you feel about Ben Affleck saying that the cure to addiction is only suffering?

I have heard plenty of quotes from addicts about having to hit rock bottom before making a decision to fix themselves.
"Rock bottom" is different for everyone.

Too much of a blanket statement, I think. You can overcome some addictions without much or any suffering. On the other hand, there are many addictions that are impossible to overcome without suffering physically and mentally. Often severe suffering.

I would disagree, assuming he’s talking about suffering as a result of the addiction and not as a result of quitting (i.e. withdrawal). Plenty of people start and stop things they do for good reasons, for stupid reasons, and for reasons that may not be clear even to them. I’m sure suffering is a common one but not the only reason.

Each addict has to quit in their own way.
Best advice I ever got was that a family member would not stop being an addict until he was ready. So stop wasting money trying to save him. Just be ready if he ever needs you.

He is correct. I can’t tell you how many addicts who have been hospitalized beg for something to dull the ache and there is nothing

I'll throw him a bone, he is part of the hollywood community. A place that is rife with substance abuse of all kinds. He probably knows more people fighting addiction that most everyone on this board.
