We’ve been hearing for years that over the next decade automation is going to eliminate almost half of the current jobs. I don’t see why people act like there is something that can be done to stop it.

Unfortunately, I had to go into a Wal-Mart recently and they only had 1 regular line open. The rest was self check-out and they were line up 20 people deep.

Go to the self-checkouts at the opposite end of the store from the grocery department

Always use self check out if possible. I don't want to talk to the checker about my day. The person in front of me is sitting there talking to the checker and I'm thinking...STFU and check out so it can be my turn

Why is everyone becoming so antisocial these days. is this a phone/social media effect? Don't tell me its about saving time because you came here to a online board to do so anonymously. Coming here to post your thought probably took more of your time than having a casual conversation while being checked out.

People come here to unwind, not the grocery store

My only complaint is that I feel there should be a 3 or 5% discount for checking out and bagging your own groceries etc.

I would use them in exchange for a discount. Otherwise, F them.

Your discount is your time. That’s why people who value their time use them.

Saves me time. Go through them all the time.

HEB near me has a cool one where it’s 25 items or less, rather than the usual 10 for self checkout. It has a conveyor belt and there’s someone who bags and loads your groceries in the cart. All I have to do is scan.

Pretty damn nice. I even go to it when I have 31 items in my basket.

Everything in moderation…except bullets to the gap.

But I have no problem with them…except that the damn chip reader never works so every single time I have to play the stupid little game where my chip has to be denied 2-3 times before I can swipe it.

Love 'em. Of all the things to be irritated about, that's way down on my list. What does irritate the frick out of me is someone writing a fricking check in the checkout line.

I was in a regular Walmart last week (yes, they still exist in south Arkansas), and there was an old in the checkout line writing a fricking check. I bet the entire process of him getting out his checkbook, slowly writing the check, handing it to the cashier, and then the cashier getting more info from him to write on top of the check took 5 minutes. Now that shite is irritating.

The ones that make you leave every single item in the bagging area until you pay are the absolute worst.

Dont tell me to checkout my entire cart of groceries myself, and somehow find a way to jenga my entire basket on your tiny 2x3 bagging area attached to the scanner.

Im gonna place each bag in my cart as i go, and you can stand here putting in your override code.

Other than that, i dont really care

Shiiiiiiiit. Might as well get over that. Stores are looking at increasing their profit margin. They care about nothing else.

I use them whenever available and like ones with the long conveyor belts if we're buying a lot of stuff. Some losers at lower-end stores see it as an opportunity to steal, but I think most people are honest.

Good.

No idea why anyone would want to use cash with self checkout.

I can scan my stuff faster and bag my stuff better than any grocery store employee.
