. Yeah you would be wrong here. Now if you say most will not know anyone hospitalized or that dies from the Chinese virus I would agree. But most of us will
Catch it or know someone who did.

I'm a Nurse so this is what I would do: I would ask why she is not on Chloroquine since she is already on pac. I start asking the doctor what is her o2 sat, how much of her diet is she eating, she able to feed herself, is she using supplemental o2, can she ambulate to the BR on her own. Criteria for discharge from the hospital is fever free x 24 hrs without Tylenol, and able to call for help if her condition worsen.
I would ask to speak to the DC nurse because per medicare you can refuse discharge esp if she is still running a temp. She sounds like she will need assistance once dc.
Praying for you and your mother.

If she goes home, make sure to buy her a pulse ox (the thing that clips on finger and measures oxygenation). They sell them at CVS/Walgreens these days. Monitor that closely and return to hospital if Oxygen levels drop.

Tell them she needs the Hydroxychloroquine/Zpack regimen immediately.

Is she on Medicare? Medicare (and Medicare replacement plans) has a specific provision relating to discharge. You can tell the hospital that you are appealing the discharge decision. Ask them to send you a copy of the “Important Message from Medicare” (they will know exactly what that is) so you can get the phone number to call in the event they don’t delay the discharge on their own. The number on that document goes to a CMS entity which will call the hospital and tell them you have appealed the discharge through that channel and they have to hold the discharge while DHH reviews the details and decides if the discharge is truly premature.

One issue I would have with the discharge is an appropriate safe discharge plan. It seems she will need home health services and I’m not sure which home health services are accepting known COVID+ patients.

Someone asked about PT in the hospital. In our hospital only MD/NP/PA and RN are routinely allowed in COVID rooms. RT as neede but to be minimized. Everyone else is not supposed to go on the room.

Is she on trumps medicine?

Trump literally cured corona with old cheap medicine but most doctors won’t prescribe it because they’d rather sky scream

What is happening is with whatever diagnosis(es) they are giving her she used up the allocated time allowed and they will lose money here on out. Maybe ask them if they have all her ailments on chart - diabetes etc.???

If she is not having trouble breathing, there is not much the hospital can do for her.

In a month, we will be able to mock people who are pushing to put Americans back to work prematurely because the shut down is economically painful.

Which it is. Nobody is saying it isn't. But they act like the administration is only listening to doctors and scientists and not weighing their advice against incoming economic advice.

Plus, as wiseguy said, it's more than likely a Medicare driven issue.

I like how anyone can come up with a story about a patients at a hospital, post generalized details, and have this entire board white knight for them for 5 pages.

I’m not saying this story isn’t true, but with no specifics posted about the hospital in question or the person making the claim, none of y’all know if this story is true either

I think our staff is face timing and helping with calls. I’m assuming that there are also “visits” at windows and st the doors withoit anyone actually going in.

I’m working from home so not 100% sure.

My 70 y/o mom was hospitalized w/ pneumonia in both lungs and subsequently tested positive for COVID 3 days ago. She is still running fever, not eating, unable to move around her her own and is generally not feeling well, but the hospital is really pushing for a discharge. I get the impression it is because she isn't having problems breathing. How can it be OK to discharge someone who tested positive and is still running fever etc and not showing signs of improvement (only stable at best)? This particular hospital is not crowded and has open beds. She is insured so it is not a payment issue.

I can't tell if I'm just being overly concerned because it's my mom, or if something is up. Thoughts?

Why is she in the hospital if she isn't having problems breathing?

Scruffy,

Unrelated side note (but this is the OFF TOPIC lounge): Have you ever seen a case of Kawasaki's disease in your practice?

I would be very worried. The problem with Covid is that it is sneaky, and sometimes people seem stable but they crash very quickly. This disease takes weeks to kill someone, and the last ten days are the worst. I think the reason why so many are dying in Louisiana is crap like this. Either they do not get the test and have no idea they have it, or they die before the test comes back.

The biggest problem is many do not go to the hospital early enough but go in the last few days of the disease. At that point, they go straight on a vent and likely do not make it.

If it were me, I'd tell Mom to say NO, and stay. Better safe than sorry. ( I am not a medical pro, but every story I read about someone that passes away is always about them suffering up until the last week, and then going to ER and ending up in ICU)
