We did New York relatively cheap (still starting out and just found out we were going to have a kid). Won't lie that the room was covered for us. But you absolutely don't have to eat at an insanely expensive restaurant every meal or anything like that. We did Broadway and Museums and typical touristy shite. I think I spent $1k total outside of hotel and plane tickets. Easily could have gotten the plane tickets and hotel for under $2k. I think that was 4 nights.
Get out of here with that. Yeah, you go to a nice restaurant every night, you'll get that. But not everyone requires some crazy dining experience (and I realize it can get more expensive than that). There are certainly options similar to anywhere else in the country. Might be a few bucks more expensive being in NY, but you aren't limited to only high dollar experiences.

Dinner for $28? Not going to happen. Looking more like $50/60 a head at least on an average dinner

? $5,000 for "children's lessons?
Put your kid in anything worth a shite and this is not unreasonable.
Dance, performing arts, voice, piano, muscical instrument can run upwards of $800/month in South La for ONE discipline. Say little Suzy wants to sing AND play piano. Yep. That one isn't terrible.

Yeah, I fricked that one up. Not even going to edit because I deserve ridicule.
They still have a lot more disposable income than the article is suggesting.

At that point, I would explore one parent working part time to reduce daycare, and not sub out the raising of my child.
Well that's idiotic because then you would be living under a bridge while your wife watches your child in San Fran

The kicker is always the mortgage. The faster you can pay that house off, the better you will be. With that logic, most people buy at the top of what they are approved for. Better to buy well under budget and pay it off early, then use that house to springboard into the house you want.
I did that with my home in BR. Bought after Katrina (the only bad part of this decision was the timing). Right under 2000 sq ft, average home. 25% down, 15 year mortgage. Drove used cars, no note. Saved 15%, rolled extra savings into investments. When my portfolio reached enough to pay the loan off, that’s what I did. Paid it off in 9 years. Sold that house, bought my next one and paid half of the home value down. Same model, 15 years and plan to pay it off early.

9 meals at $250 comes out to ~$28/person/meal.
The poster said $250 for three people

edit: How many cities out of state (over 500 miles) have you been to this year?
Lol if that is how you wanna judge it, I beat that number on ONE vacation... We took 2 weeks and drove/flew from Vancouver this Las Vegas.

Wife had to go for "work", so half the trip was basically covered for free and she barely had to do anything while there. We had enough miles for my ticket. It was kind of a last minute thing.

And you stayed in each city for 5 days?
Fair enough. Props to you. But yall making it seem like I don't leave DFW in this bitch. Not true at all

A kingair from Fayetteville to Dallas and back for the football game cost 8k alone.

I don’t really see an issue with this. What more do they need money for? They budgeted just about everything and still have money left over.
Expensive house, but I can’t hate on that

No, but I also didn't know you were going to add arbitrary qualifiers as we go along.

$50 is not going to get you a meal at a very nice restaurant, in NY or any other major city if you are planning on having any alcohol with your meal.

It's all situational. We currently have a comfortable mortgage. But live in a meh school district. We would probably send our kid to a local private school, but that cost is ~17-20k per year. I'd rather move about 5 miles into a better area and pay a bit more on my mortgage than drop 20k a year for 12 years.

I am just trying to prove a point, through my work I do get to do touristy things. Ergo, no desire for me to take weeks off at a time.
I get ~28 days as it is. I normally just extend weekends here and there throughout the year or take December off.

I think in 6-7 years when I'm 35 I'll have enough money and be comfortable enough that I could entertain the idea of having one child.
Mrs Pecker, on the other hand, I just don't see her getting there. She's anti-baby. It's a career thing for her too, as we've discussed many times.

I get it. I sent my oldest to Parkview for K-1 while I lived there in BR. Part of the motivation of moving was schools, and it made sense for us to make the plunge on our current home. But we only borrowed a little more than half of the home value.
Our plan is to either stay here til the kids get out of grade school or maybe upgrade after this one is paid off. We won’t buy a house in the future if we can’t afford to put 50% down though.

It isn't a financial decision. You only have 5 years before your kids enter the system. I don't want to sub those years out. The tweaks I made allow more interaction in those years.
