With all this talk of vacation, can we all come to an agreement that Disney World doesn't qualify as a "vacation?"
I'm still bitter that DW was our "vacation" this year

That kind of thinking is why we get the couple in the OP.
???
The couple in the OP that funds retirement, covers insurance, takes vacations and buys nice things, and still has almost $500 leftover every month?

Salmon you don't know what I do for work? I figured you did.
Out of the 5 days in town, I maybe spend ~3 in TMO/Nokia Lab. The others I go sight see and visit old co-workers who moved up there. We typically walk a trail or two.

That's with snacks included
Dude spends less than 9 per person on food...while on vacation

Three plane tickets: $1000
Hotels in Times Square: ~$600 for three nights
Food for three (9 meals, say a few snacks): ~$250
So that's what? $1800 right there? Where the hell are you getting $5000?
As someone who has to go to NY for work pretty often, I can tell you you're way off. Or you are really cheap.
Flights from LA to NY are probably going to run you about $400 at minimum per person roundtrip, so $1,200.
Any decent hotel in the city is going to be $350 per night or more, again I'm being generous. So $1,050.
And the food....are you just eating slices of pizza with a coke for every meal? I'd say you'd need to budget $250 A DAY for 3 people to eat, and even then that's really pushing it. New York is not a cheap place to eat out. So there's $750 (but I'd argue it would be well over a grand in reality.)
So that's $3k for just flights, lodging, and food. For a 3 day trip to NY.

The thought of being at a park for 10+ hours in 1 day with 2 young kids....gross!

A bottle at any of the clubs cost $500 each. and if your paying $500 for a room in NYC your staying in some dump.

No one cares, but it's strange.
I live for vacation. Although I'm a simple man so most of that is fishing, and or camping in the mountains.
