Because they manipulate everything you see on their platform however they see fit - whether it be for advertiser money or for political change as they see fit. It's power like nobody's had before, and they are using it to assloads of money and to enact their own political agenda. These platforms are now so engrained in our society that they aren't going anywhere, either. We have to regulate these companies who hold so much power over our lives.

So yeah, you're correct that it's what people "want", but they want it on a subconscious level and these companies manipulate what you see to purposefully amp up your monkey brain and give you those dopamine hits to keep you coming back. Because it's subconscious you have very little control over it. Do one social media cleanse for a month and I promise it'll be all too clear once you come back to it. The hooks are deep.

Yeah. I know.

I think drugs should be legal, so...

I do too, but that's a different ballgame. These companies would be more akin to the pharmaceutical companies shilling Oxycontin as "non addictive" and getting the entire world addicted, and having the power to manipulate small countries and weak governments based upon the supply of drug they give.

My guess is this documentary is based in theory and correlation much like the other surveillance capital pieces.
Every person on the documentary was a member, created, founder, former president or VP, etc., of all of those companies.

This documentary is from people who worked for all these companies, from Google to Facebook to Twitter.

This is from their perspective, not outsiders.

They are the ones sounding the alarms, the people who were involved with creating the programs.

I'm rarely on social media these days, except for TD

and the fundamental difference between me and you here is that I just hold the person accountable for their actions/decisions.

We should educate on the dangers and affects of social media use, but I'm just don't think more government is the solution.

This is a human problem and government isn't going to legislate it away.

That's great. But how can every user of these platforms be manipulated when this knowledge has been public for years? They cannot certainly say with any accuracy to what degree an individual is manipulated. So it's still theory.

I'll never understand why a place like TD, that almost always preaches personal responsibility, completely trashes that thought when it comes to social media

its super weird

It's not weird when you realize what they are.

I think personal responsibility should be a great part of a solution, but I don't think it'll be the only solution. These companies manipulate people on a large scale, and not everyone sees it as blatantly, particularly children and teenagers.

There should be a large campaign to push personal responsibility.

All social media does is broadcast to the world how and what people truly are when no one is around. And for that I give thanks to social media. It red pilled the frick out of me back in 2012.

Adults over the age of 55 are probably just as vulnerable as teenagers to this.

Also I find it funny (or frightening) that I have zero political stuff on my FB, but FB has me labeled as "conservative"

How do you know what FB labels you as? I never post, so this makes me curious.

Basically, machine learning algos curate more than adds. They try and pick out news stories we are interested in as well as taylor search results using these data. It’s gotten to the point where most of our news feeds are dominated by media and info that meets our confirmation bias. The psychological ramifications are problematic for people that don't realize that social media and personalization services will create an echo chamber.

Therein lies the story. Not only is it trying to tailor news and viral bullshite being pushed in your face, it's trying to piss people off and get them all riled up.

In 100 years, social media is going to be regarded as the "Assasination of Franz Ferdinand" moment that started the race war.

They don't know to what degree because AI is in control. That's why you put in 2 words in google and something pops up to fill the sentence that was literally in your brain. The machine has learned how to keep you locked in for longer and tickles your biases.

Not everyone has the same brain makeup and some people can turn it off but for many it is a serious problem. We have unleashed something that crawls into people's brains and rots them from the very core as well as destroying friendships and further dividing the human race.

It is a pretty big dilemma

I know that most users of this website are staunchly conservative, but not all problems can be solved by private sector and individuals. Sometimes problems are at a scale that requires government intervention.

how is the government going to keep people from creating other sites that do the exact same thing?

just like with the War on Drugs, you will be fighting a losing battle

Yes, I've seen it. It's a proven fact that some people can be turned into puppets. Young people believe most everything that they see and hear even though sight and sound can be manipulated. Very few think or research for themselves. Fake media has always been real and manipulative people will seek people out that they can further their agenda. The phone is not the enemy nor is the technology from the phone. The real enemy is the ones who program the phones and the apps that so many fools think they can't live without.

I'm just naturally skeptical of anything Netflix puts out now. They are very much a part of Tech Intelligentsia and I'm not saying there is a consorted effort to "control," but it feels like there is.

Their Epstein stuff, this, etc. All of that world is connected together, and I can't trust anything coming out of it.

They'd be essentially putting problems onto their own people, no one does that without purpose.

They've already OPENLY admitted they use data and analytics to construct shows, hire actors, etc. Why wouldn't they do the same with this?

They do, but one key difference between a company like Netflix and one like Facebook is the monetization model.

Netflix is going to make shows that people want to watch because they're entertaining and they enjoy them. You are the customer. They aren't trying to steer the user base to the most extreme of things to keep eyes glued for advertisers.
