I just hope that it shows people just how much money they are worth as the product.....Apple, Google, FB, Instagram, Pinterest, etc don't make shite by selling stuff.....they make literally 100s of billions by selling us.

I'm not saying watching it will change anyone's behavior, but it is at least good to be educated.

Definitely no behavior will be changed. How else could a woman know that another woman she knows nothing about, but hates anyway, took a vacation to Belize, or got a haircut, or got new cabinets, or the kids ate lunch?

You could tell these people that their soul was being sold and they couldn't give up the addiction.

how is the government going to keep people from creating other sites that do the exact same thing?

just like with the War on Drugs, you will be fighting a losing battle

I don't know, frankly. I'm just some IT idiot on the internet.

There are experts out there that should be working to figure this out.

here is what is creepy as hell to me

went to the dollar general store (first time ever stepping in that place) - I was actually impressed.

Anyways, I started getting facebook ads, google ads, etc on my phone. I even got one on Tigerdroppings

Never been to their website or searched for them on the internet.

That's messed up that they are using your location to advertise to you.

I watched it - while nothing they said was surprising or unknown, it was shocking to hear the actual people involved in building these platforms come out and say that they believe it's basically leading to the destruction of humanity and democracy.

What kind of data where they using to ever think that making Cuties was a good idea?

The data that said it would be a political firestorm when times are tough and people are looking for anything new to watch. And it would become a story AND be popular.

And it worked.

I wouldn't disagree.

However, that pure efficiency is exactly what leads to surveillance capitalism. It is currently the MOST efficient way to increase revenue.

The one guy who said it would eventually lead to civil war didn't seem totally far fetched to me.

It wasn’t popular. People cancelled their accounts because of that movie.

There are at least 4 threads about it, and people watching to see the controversy.

And I'm sure some people did, but this did not happen at any noticeable level of scale. But it's either 1) Part of the cost or 2) Netflix expects to win them back.

Cuties, sadly, was a success, whether you want to admit it or not. Because that's the world we live in.

I have watched it. Everyone should watch it because most people are too stupid to understand social media. However they probably will call this fake news and turn it back to WWE and drink more mountain dews.

It's worth a watch but it takes a hard left at the end..."we live in a world where a dead tree is worth more than a live one..." ...no shite.

Most of it is common sense. But there are some good takeaways. I did like the mention about the phone being a digital pacifier.

Because they have financial incentives to do so. Namely to stay in business.

The government has no such incentives. It can raise taxes and print money at will.

But sure--let's put them in charge of healthcare. That'll fix everything.

Haven’t watched it yet but I’d like to share an observation:

I’ve noticed on fbook for the past 2-3 days, that many people are posting about this show, and they are all the same posts:

“OMG this was sooo eye opening. Y’all really need to watch this it TOTALLY freaked me out“

Yet they still post and continue to participate in facebook type shite. I don’t get it

They point out what they think is wrong with social media, warn other people about it, say it scares them, and do absolutely NOTHING different

Maybe they’re right. Maybe social media has ruined them. Maybe they’re too addicted to Facebook to put the shite down and heed their own advice. I don’t understand

The only one I rarely use is Twitter. Don't have Facebook, Instagram or an Amazon account. I plan on keeping it that way.

Still higher than they were in June, If it was a 30%+ drop there might be an issue, but the drop is well within other drops over the last year. Now, they've breached the subject and they can either re-release it later under the radar, or they can release the opposite side of the issue and a create a related story, etc.

It's all orchestrated.

They try and pick out news stories we are interested in as well as taylor search results using these data. It’s gotten to the point where most of our news feeds are dominated by media and info that meets our confirmation bias. The psychological ramifications are problematic for people that don't realize that social media and personalization services will create an echo chamber.
Wouldn’t you rather them tailor your feed to your individual preference than subtly only show you stories that advance the public good?
