Wait, are you saying that the result of witnessing what multiple 5.56 rounds does to the human chest cavity will be that people want that to happen to them as well?

It's more than that, and I'm ambivalent about this, I think the families deserve justice, the whole country needs justice, if anyone ever deserved the death penalty, this animal does, and I'll likely watch it. But should we have the faith in our institutions that we can say, "I trust you to do what is necessary, carry on?"

I grew up at a time when we were a high trust society, we are not any longer. This seems like another step into the coarsening of our culture, we trust less, we want to see it happen. This is more than a public execution, to see that you had to go to a place to watch it, now you will only have to take your phone out of your pocket.

I don't give a damn about Hasan, and I hope this had a deterrent effect that others speak of, I respect the others opinions and I hope this help warn off other extremists.

What era did you grow up in that you consider to have been a high trust society? And what do you think is different now compared to then that makes it no longer a high trust society?

Let me counter this:

All executions should be public. They used to be.

If we as a society, as a people, choose that man or woman's life must be taken in order to obtain redress, justice or act as a deterrent for abhorrent behavior, we must all witness it.

This is not ghoulish. This is the solemn acceptance of communal resolve and...guilt. If this is our choice as a society, we must all accept equal amounts of responsibility for that choice.

We must watch.

Now, if we cannot bear the pain of watching, then we do away with executions, but hiding the act behind a wall and dark night is cowardly. We made this choice. Bear the cost.

The reason executions were moved behind prison walls was not to spare the public the pain of watching. It was because they had become carnivals, complete with souvenir stands and food and drink vendors. Another poster used the word "coarsening" and I agree. Nobody is going to watch this with their collective responsibility in mind. People who watch it will do so with prurient interest. It will eventually end up on gore sites.

Us and Saudi Arabia. Great company.

Maybe they’ll make a night of it and show How The Grinch Stole Christmas afterwards.

the soon to be departed hasan is a radical Islamic terrorist. A public execution will make him a martyr and will provide video footage for future Islamist propaganda. They want to kill the infidel and die. For the glory of allah

Now tell me how giving them exactly what they want is a deterrent

I think it’s important for all of the affected families to be able to have a chance to see it, but I also get how there’s perverts out there who do nothing but surf the web for trauma porn videos all day every day.

Really a subject for another thread, but since you asked, in the era from 50's & 60's. ITGOD (in the good old days), you could hitchhike almost anywhere with little fear, at 10 years old I could take a bus from Metairie to the eye doc on Canal St., by myself. Every parent was your protector and your mentor, screw up and your parents took it from there. Teachers were admired and respected, There were counter checks at every big grocery store, if you didn't have cash or a checkbook, just use one to fill out with your name, the check was honored. Smaller grocery stores, if you didn't have money they would put it on your family tab, mom or dad would pay it later. Learning to deal with bullies was part of growing up, parents didn't get involved. When we started dating, we didn't have curfews, we knew what the girl's parents expected.

I remember when I was 17, my car broke down on Airline Hwy, I stuck out a thumb, a car full of black guys stopped for me, I got in and they dropped me off when I got to my street.

It was very, very different.

ABC:
Major Nadal Hasan, accused of killing 13 at the sprawling military base last November.
What a cheesy mini-spin.

That's some serious denial they have going on there.

Guy deserves to die. I'm even ok with the firing squad. But allowing public video of the shooting execution of a malnourished, wheelchair bound military prisoner will make for some damn effective propaganda in the future.

I honestly cannot quibble with this in good faith. Yes, I could counter your points but that would be gameifying morality.

To me, seeing, witnessing the end result of our laws and policies is of utmost importance. Hiding it only allows a distant, clinical, below the fold attitude towards something as important and final as death.

We can disagree, and I wont deny the joy people find in death. You can see it in this thread, and I will shed no tears for the killer.

I just believe it's important for people to see. I dont think people should be able to offload collective responsibility to the state as a shield for their false morality.

The lack of a high trust society is almost totally due to shifting demographics. Nothing to do with capital punishment.

You say shite like this as you and your comrades vote for open borders across the west, with the absolute certain result of turning the west into actual Saudi Arabia

While I’m all for the execution and the bullets soak in pig blood. I’m not really on board with the public part. We are not supposed to be doing third world stuff.
