Why is it difficult to believe that a respected private school with an undergraduate enrollment probably less that 1/4 of W&M would have a lower acceptance rate than public schools that are statutorily required to have a certain % of in-state matriculants?

That list puts a high emphasis on acceptance rate.
Of course Alabama has a more competitive acceptance rate than most schools in the state. It's a state school with a huge national spotlight from the football team AND they've made a concentrated effort to advertise to out-of-state students.
They get around 36k applicants per year and accept ~19k of them.
Auburn on the other hand gets ~19k applicants and accepts ~15k of them.
But Auburn has higher average ACT scores, SAT scores, and GPA for accepted applicants.
I'm not really trying to say one is better than the other here as both schools are about even in academic prowess. You go to Alabama for some programs and Auburn for others.
But the list picked a poor value to emphasize in determining their winners.

Maybe more people apply to Hahvahd, making their acceptance rate a little lower? I dunno either; they are both pretty good schools.

I always tell him his group of friends looks like Angelina Jolie’s kids.
Very diverse group - black (the kind with the big black-rimmed glasses), Asian, Blasian, Indian (both dot and feather), pasty white kids, etc. And they pretty much all have ACT scores above 30, several in the 33-36 range. Not what most people would expect from a Slidell public school.
I’m surprised how few of them have even considered LSU. Obviously the ones shooting for Stanford, Yale, MIT, etc. don’t have LSU on their list - but I’m shocked by how many of these smart kids are going to schools like La. Tech and ULL over LSU for engineering.

UVA and W&M are state schools, so not so hard to get into for the majority.

Millsaps is obviously the toughest school in MS to get into.
The best small college/large college in each SEC state goes like this:
Texas: Southwestern/A&M
Louisiana: Centenary/Tulane
Mississippi: Millsaps/Ole Miss
Arkansas: Hendrix/Arkansas
Missouri: Washington U./Mizzou
Tennessee: Sewanee/Vanderbilt
Alabama: BSC/Alabama
Georgia: Emory/Tech
Florida: Rollins/UF
South Carolina: Furman/Clemson
Kentucky: Centre/UK
