He also inspired one of my favorite episodes of American Dad. LINK

I always got the impression from him that he really gave a shite when doing his shows. He seemed to genuinely respect the people he was visiting, their recipes, and what they did. I take all those shows with a grain of salt, but it did always come off to me that he was very genuine with people.

Absolutely. Especially on DDD the fans would send him to some diner in Minnesota where the chef would prep his "famous meatloaf". You could tell this was nothing to write home about much less have a Food Network show visit, but he would do his best in these situations to sell the product for the sake of that family business.

His show has been great during the pandemic. Zoom meeting with chefs from restaurants he's visited over the years. They help him recreate their dishes from his backyard kitchen

the banter is pretty entertaining

Yep. He did a great job of that. Those types of places, you could always tell he did enjoy the food, as it was probably pretty good, but he always had another level when he had something that was just dynamite. Very subtle but good way to not disparage someone, while still giving credit to the truly fantastic dishes.

It's actually been quite a redemption story. Guy was an absolute laughing stock for a long time, targeted by the likes of Bourdain, the NYT, etc. Every day people made fun of him for coming across like a Grade A douchebag.

Over the last couple of years, though, he's experienced an incredible turnaround in the public eye. Be it through his charity work, his embrace of being who he is instead of allowing peer pressure to change him, Triple D becoming a mainstay food show, and positive press.

Is it "Q ratings" where some company measures public perception of celebrities? I can't remember, but I'd wager his chart looks damn impressive.

I can see how his TV personality isn’t unanimously adored but he does seem like a decent dude

And that smashmouth/ICP meme gets me every time

That's always been my feelings toward him. On tv he just doesn't seem like a person I would like at all. In real life, he's a legitimate good guy. His efforts to help restaurant workers who got fricked over due to Covid were great to see.

Just goes around the country feeding his face, fist bumping, and saying "amazing bro." He won at life.

Bourdain always came across to me as a pretentious a-hole.

I adore Bourdain, but I wouldn't be surprised if he actually subconsciously hated who he had become. He was pretty much the guy he would make fun of in his earlier work.
Always wondered if that had a role in his suicide.

Honestly, one of the best shows to just have on in the background. Love GF, he's the man

ETA: Really funny standup bit from Shane Torres

In Defense of Guy Fieri

agreed. while the show was cool, you could tell he just really enjoyed the smell of his own farts.

i never hated on Guy, but laughed at and was mildly annoyed at the persona, but by all accounts he's a great dude and has built on that since the pandemic.

he's one where i'd be really disappointed if it turned out that he's a douche bag, but all accounts here seems to say that's not the case.

Dude has absolutely earned it. Being a star at that level is all about building your brand, and Guy Fieri is 100% brand power. His brand isn’t for everybody, but it generates a hardcore following and it has broad enough appeal to get a large audience. Few stars have the level of brand that Fieri does. He has greater brand appeal than some of his closest comparisons like Gordon Ramsey (reality chef star) or Chip & Joanna Gaines (HGTV brand stars). And he’s my second favorite Food network personality behind the unicorn

Seems to be all over the place, but I believe in a couple of 'which celebrity is the biggest jerk' threads, he has been the winner.

Eta: He had a pretty cool episode on the smoking tire podcast.

I'm surprised Food Network is developing new episodes. They could likely make just as much on re-runs.

That's basically all they've been airing since Covid. Marathon "Guys Grocery Games" daily from noon til like 9pm. Saturday & Sunday mornings show a mix of shows, but Guy has dominated the network for over a year now.
