You can get the same effect from mustard. Something about acetic acid in mustard helping to form acetyl choline.

A guy I work with.. When he gets a bad cold he swears that sitting in a hot steamy bath tub of water for awhile helps get rid of it faster because you sweat it out..

Two from Germany:
Summer sore throat: wrap your throat tightly with a scarf for two days.
For wasp stings: a cut onion applied to the surface over the bite.

For US wasp and yellow jackets and bees: baking soda in water
For small exposed cuts: rendered pork fat

The old folks would also make a whiskey tit for kids when they needed to sleep, especially when teething. Basically it was a wash cloth or handkerchief with sugar in it and twisted and tied. Soak up some whiskey and the aggravated baby would calm down after chewing/sucking on it.

My mom swore by Vick’s vapor rub and vitamin c.

Her mom’s cure all: whiskey and honey, wrapped in a blanket, sat in a rocking chair in the sun.

Evidently "Daddy" on Party Down South was as well. He said he poured it in his pee hole to clean up infections.

I told my brother this and the dumbass heard "cornmeal" instead. Lets just say it didn't work out so well for him.
