To add to the discussion...

A spoonful of kerosene for a cough

A spoonful of Vicks vapo rub for a sore throat/sinus issue. My grandpa would scoop out two fingers full as though he was dipping them into a jar of peanut butter Joey style.
Joey

Steam with Cayenne (keep your eyes closed!!!)

Netty Pot (snot pot)

An aspirin for for my sister to prevent pegnancy (held between the knees). Not to worry OT - Im not from Alabama.
No pics...she is 16...sorry gumps.

Honey on a burn/cut

Vinegar for heartburn

Pickle juice for cramps

Warmed up gold on a stye

Sorry for the long list, but my town was fairly rural growing up.

I remember one time when I was no more than 8 or so I got real sick with the flu. I was running a bad fever and my Grandma was helping take care of me and her "remedy" to break my fever was to slice potatoes and place them in a damp towel folded over to contain them and place that on my forehead.

The potatoes would turn brown and that meant the fever was being taken away. Problem is, as everyone knows, potatoes turn brown once they are peeled, all on their own.

I had more chewing tobacco applied to bee stings than I care to think about as a kid. My grandma would chew some of my grandpa's tobacco and put it on the sting and made me hold it there until the pain was gone.

One of my aunts would use Dr. Tichenor's for every ailment known to man. It was her go-to for everything from cuts (and that burned like hell) to sore throats.

At least they didn't hurt anything, as long as she didn't deprive you of legit treatment. I read an interesting article yesterday about another form of placebo:

True Cajuns from Avoyelles parish. If you get a sore throat you get your throat "painted" with Mercurochrome or merthiolate (original monkey blood with the Mercury). My family stocked up on cases of it when the ban was announced. Wrap cotton around the end of a throat swab and as someone held ur forehead while sitting on their lap another would swab your throat. It burned like hell but u were better within 24 hrs. We still do it to our kids. If you're from Central you probably went to Dr Holt as a child. He even painted our throats with monkey blood.

Also, someone would light a cig and slowly blow the smoke in the ear with an ache. The warmth helped the pain.

And a salve for everything.

My grandma uses to have a bottle of homemade cough syrup. I know it had whiskey, honey, lemon, and rock candy in it.

Rub lard for penile enlargement, but don't substitute Crisco, because it's shortening.

Peppermint candy for indigestion.

Not Grand maws remedy but meat tenderizer for mosquito bites. Wet it and make a paste and rub it in. It works.

Baking soda in water is the GOAT for heartburn. Makes tums seem like candy. One dose knocks it out fast.
