100% your fault. Nobody screwed you except for yourself. Would you do this with a used car? Why do it with a riding lawnmower?

so you bought a mower that didn't work and then were made when it didn't work
I bought it knowing it wouldn't start, with the understanding that I would need to clean and/or change the carbeurator. I was prepared to spend a few hundred more for that. Not change the entire engine, which makes it not even worth buying the machine.

You expected to pay $900 (mower plus repair) for a working lawnmower that retails for, at minimum, over $3,000 new? Sounds like you should be mad at only one person, you.

it's always a gamble to buy something like that used. looks like you lost the gamble.
Always check compression. You can borrow a gauge from autozone or oreilly for free.

Why didn't you or someone check out the carburetor to verify that's all it was? Pretty easy to do.
Or use some ether in it to see if the engine would fire?
I am a horrible mechanic but I know enough to check a few things before buying a PoS.

What kind of mower/motor?

Looks like it retails for around $3,200-$3,500

Should've cleaned it and attempted to start it before buying. That isn't hard. And you would've known it was shot before handing over the money.

What's the actual engine issue? It still may be repairable for a few hundred and some elbow grease.

You sir, are an idiot. Also, when he said "I can do most things, but never cleaned one before. Lol" this would be your tell that he is scamming you. It's pretty easy and if he had all the other things changed why wouldn't he do that too? if you should learn anything, it's if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

No you did it with the ASSUMPTION of what needed to be fixed not the understanding...big difference

Can't really argue with that

One should be suspicious when buying something that isn’t running but supposedly only needs some cheap part or service to get it running. If that was true, why wouldn’t the seller get it running and then sell the functioning mower for a lot more?
