Idk how it was back then, but in the early 2010s greek life was extremely cliquish and more like country clubs than animal house party culture.

Our 1980's hazing involved physical torture, kidnapping across state lines, public humiliation and drinking piss.

Might have been worth it for the parties.

Could start a long thread about the unworldly stuff seen and done at those 80's parties.

Why make friends when you can buy them? Go Greek.

The best thing would be partying with your sorority match ups.

And here's about the worst.

For example. You’re out of work and looking for something. One of your former fraternity brothers is in a position to get your foot in the door with a company. Life’s all about who you know.

The same could be said of joining the army. Belonging to a church. Joining a club.

My army network has helped me tremendously. Church too.

I went the GDI route, do i feel like i missed out yes, was it a big deal no. The ability to go to the parties, the mixers, and all of the jazz are seemingly worth the price of admission for the larger ones. If i had to do it over again thats route i'd go. Also the networking for various career related things starting out. (to be fair i was an out of state student who started late, who had no concept of any of the frat things)

If the peak of your life was acting like a man child and paying for friends, I am sorry to hear that lol

What was the best thing about being in a frat?

What advice would you give a new kid going into rush?

I pledged 45 years ago, and many of my current best friends are from my fraternity. That's the best thing, but the parties, girls, intramurals, and laughing at the screw-ups were great.

As for advice, I guess I'd say that fat, drunk and stupid are no way to go through life. For a time, it appeared that I was on that path.

Recreational clubs are a great way to meet a variety of people, share a common interest, and find new interests that may become a lasting part of who you are. Outdoor rec introduced me to rock climbing, back packing, fishing, mountain biking etc… met a lot of great people and I still do those activities to this day. Clubs are highly underrated, imo.

Like urinating through the side door of the Acacia house during their mixers.

The losers of this board will give you every reason not to be in one. Best part is you always have something to do and meet tons of people.

Advice for him is “fake it to make it” during rush if he’s not a confident guy. Also never say your going to be in a certain fraternity if you don’t have a bid to that one yet, this will reach that fraternity and they will most of the time immediately cut you. Stay away from Beta, Theta Chi, Pike, and Delta Chi. All others are solid and will have plenty of cool dudes

(advice from my son who is in one of the bigger ones)

Best men I ever knew. Also the worst. What a great experience overall-lifetime friends who are like family. I told my son not to join (he didn't want to anyhow because hes a musician and that's his life) because our highly feminized, anti-male culture targets young men and people are too low IQ now to do anything except drool out the narrative about fraternities they have learned through the Leftist popular culture. Something something buying friends racist sexist homophobe...yada yada yada...

Business frat? Wow! The sorority girls really liked the business frat exchanges on Thursday nights before they went to Murphy’s.
