I'll take that bet.

It won't stop at this. This kind of lockdown will become the norm every time there's a new strain of the flu or some new foreign disease. We've set a precedent that the economy can be destroyed and people's lives ruined so long as the fearmongering is strong enough.

But I also have the ability to comprehend statistics and scale which is clearly lost on many people in this thread.

I do too. And one of the first things they teach you in stats is to understand your data source and population sample.

mean it's nothing like an infectious disease spread.

Let's all stop driving, and gradually start one day like a virus showing up, and see if the deaths dramatically increase.

The point is the pile of bodies attributed to car wrecks is huge, but nobody panics and quits driving because of it knowing full well it could happen to them 100% outside of their control. Why are we panicking becuase of virus deaths?

Because Ben Franklin was talking about a pandemic spread when uttered this line 250 years ago.

No, I'm following the statistics and listening to the experts in infectious disease management.

2 months about those experts told you this virus was nothing to worry about

Then 1 month ago that changed to 2.5 million deaths here

Then 2 weeks ago that became 200K

Then 1 month ago they said wearing masks wasn’t needed

Now they say wearing masks is needed

Etc etc. They maybe experts, but they are dealing with shitty data and making monumental decisions based on this shitty data, and they are simply medical experts, not financial ones that understand the ramifications of their decisions

Their has been Zero consistency in their decisions or projections. They maybe smart people in their field, but how you can have blind confidence in them is startling to me

An incredibly ridiculous hypothetical. Traffic fatalities are a constant and a known risk in society. There is no spread and there are significant measures put into place to prevent injuries.

It's in no way comparable to a pandemic spread.

Like I said, people simply don't understand spread and scale.

Being murdered is out of my control, should we just rescind all murder laws in this country?

I’m hopeful the economic consequences will force a reassessment in future situations.

people really need to stop using this comparison

we are regulated and restricted when driving and the vehicles we drive are heavily regulated

To be fair, they were trusting Chinese lies and the WHO's backing up of these lies. There needs to be a global reckoning with China after all of this.

Shitty data that gets better every day and, as a result the models change.

A FWIW, the Louisiana model has been pretty consistent for the last week or so.

Models change with new data.

Do you get pissed at meteorologists when Louisiana is in the cone 10 days out from a hurricane but, as the situation changes and nears, the cone narrows and shifts?

When you look at the current models, they have not been far off. The CDC is relying on models from Tawain for infectious spread rates and outcomes and, thus far, they have been pretty spot on.

People love to use the out-dated margins to argue that the models are wrong, which is just absurd. The federal government noted that, uncontrolled, we could see an upward margin of 2.2 million deaths. And people lock into that number to attack the credibility of the data despite the fact that it was a 1) worst-case scenario with not controls implemented and 2) was the upper margin of the worst-case scenario.

While we’re at it, let’s shut everything down until no one dies of cancer, heart disease and diabetes

The key is to limit the amount of deaths, which is something that is done with just about everything in this country that causes death.

Vehicles have continuously found new ways to limit the amount of deaths caused from vehicle accidents.

There is an ongoing fight to continue to find better ways to treat cancer.

There is more awareness being made about heart disease and some advancements made in the past 20-30 years.

During WWI more American soldiers died from infections caused by bullet wounds than the actual bullets so what happened as a result? The founding of antibiotics.

That's what happens in this country. Its the reason we have a high life expectancy.

Stop comparing this with everything else that causes death because each on is in its own category. What do you want them to do? "How many people is this virus killing? Is it going to be more than the amount of people who die from cancer a year? If not, then don't worry about it".

Some of you are acting like pussies.

I would get pissed if when its 10 days out, we acted like the meteorologists were infallible experts and we closed down businesses and put people out of jobs because of it.

No, people realize only making decisions based on the upper limit of worst case scenarios is absolute horrific risk management, yet that is what we are doing

If you truly believe that your natural rights are being unjustifiably oppressed by a tyrannical government, then you should storm the state capitol.

I'm serious. If you feel this strongly, then you are a complete pussy to not act on it.

Are the meteorologists and government officials predicting it to be the most devastating Cat 5 and we need to evacuate immediately?
