What if you were told that a storm would not be that bad, but it hits and does a lot of damage and everything has to be shut down for a few weeks so that everyone can fix everything that was damaged, etc?
Would you blame the government for downplaying the storm?

Listen, people get it but implementing policy on worst case scenarios is terrible policy.
If we practiced this across the board, authoritarian rule would be the norm at all times.
Preparation =\= implementation.

Except in this circumstance, the measures put into place have significantly reduced the chances of extreme outcomes.
It's not perfect analogous because the only thing you can do is get out of the way of a Hurricane. You can't reduce its impact like a disease.
And, you and I both know that if measures were not put into place and we had some horrendous amount of deaths, the same people bitching in this thread about the lockdown would be raising holy hell because the government did nothing.

I think letting the govt make huge decisions on how other people can making a living based only on worst case scenarios is an absolute recipe for disaster, and the fact smart people are letting their fear block them from seeing this is perplexing and frustrating

In the US, it appears we have hot spots. Blanket policy is ridiculous. Some areas are largely unaffected.

Not me. I'm 30 and in elk hunting shape. Im at more risk driving to work every day than I am of being hospitalized for covid. I guess I should be a little thankful that I certainly won't be killed on the road driving to work any time soon though

I'm the same as you. I'm in the extremely low-risk category but in terms of infectious disease spread that doesn't mean a whole lot.
