I kinda still want that brake pedal for familiarity and last minute control.

quote:

Braking distance regulations would stick around, but the physical pedals would no longer be required for cars designed to be exclusively autonomous.

quote:

Under the new regulations, cars designed to be driven exclusively by ADS would no longer require manual brake pedals. Or, in other words, cars such as Tesla's Cybercab, which was designed without a steering wheel or pedals, would be eligible for certification under FMVSS No. 135. The logic behind the decision, according to NHTSA, is that physical controls—like a steering wheel or brake pedal—aren't necessary in a vehicle that won't ever be driven by a person.

Importantly, the decision to remove the requirement for a physical brake pedal does not alter the regulations governing stopping distances. All vehicles, autonomous or not, would still be subject to federal standards that cover stopping.

The announcement also opens the door to removing other ways that we typically interact with the cars we drive. NHTSA brought up features such as rearview mirrors, windshield wipers, and windshield defrosters, which aren't necessary for the cameras and sensors typically used by ADS.

I know I'm old school (I'm 46), but I don't ever see a time where I am comfortable getting in a car that is completely self-driven/autonomous. Like not even a little bit do I see myself ever being able to do that comfortably.

Yeah, I was in Phoenix a couple of weeks ago and paid more for a regular uber instead of using Waymo.

Did Waymo one time and I surprisingly comfortable with it. During the ride we questioned why it had certain features that are used by a driver. We decided wipers and defrosting make sense to have for passenger comfort. It’s hard enough for people to get used to no driver. Not being able to clearly see outside would not work for many.

People really want the WALL-E experience where we're all a bunch of fatasses riding around in pods.

I'm 44 and I feel the same way- no chance of me ever getting in a car that doesn't have a driver.

How many calories are we burning while driving a car vs having it drive you?

If we could eliminate phone use or driver distractions I'd be in your camp but the number of idiots driving around watching TikTok or Instagram Reels is astounding and I don't trust other drivers WAY more than I don't trust an autonomous car.

Hey, no need for way to stop the car yourself. It's completely safe.

Oh you want a regular car? Yea we need a camera on your face 24/7. Oh well don't like your eye movement, let's shite down your vehicle and have the cops come check you out.

Would you prefer some of these 80+ yo drivers to use them?

If you get a health issue that keeps you from driving, would you use them at that time?

I want them to get the kinks out now (preferably in Arizona or California) so I can use them once I'm old and feeble

The driver is the company that owns the car

Over the next 40yrs these things will have worked all the kinks out. You'll get in one of those cars when you're in your 80's. No worse way to die than sitting in a lazy boy watching price is right.... when all you had to do was jump in a self driving car to get to the bar. I won't ride in one now either but they'll be gold in our elder years!

My trust in people in general continually hovers right at zero, my trust in these autonomous cars is in the triple digits....to the negative side.
