Over the next 40yrs these things will have worked all the kinks out. You'll get in one of those cars when you're in your 80's. No worse way to die than sitting in a lazy boy watching price is right.... when all you had to do was jump in a self driving car to get to the bar. I won't ride in one now either but they'll be gold in our elder years!

It'll be less than that IMO. It's going to be a little dicey at first, but there will be fewer accidents with more autonomous vehicles. Also, it would be awesome if I could put in a destination 12 hours away, go to sleep, and wake up at my destination. It would make traveling by car to far away places very easy / tolerable.

They should put those things on rails that go all the way across the country.

There’s just a whole lot of dumb arse in this thread. People that don’t know what the frick they are talking about and just spouting off about it. Some of them claiming to be in their 40s and they sound like my grandpa and I’m 69.

Full self driving is magnitudes safer than having idiots driving around in their cars, half of them reading their phone and the other half focused only in front of them and don’t know what the frick’s going on anywhere around them and don’t really care.

You idiots should become informed on the subject.

Posts like yours make everything you post questionable.

By definition, that is what autonomous means - To govern oneself. If you add a brake option, then the car can not govern oneself. It's that simple.

I know I'm old school (I'm 46), but I don't ever see a time where I am comfortable getting in a car that is completely self-driven/autonomous. Like not even a little bit do I see myself ever being able to do that comfortably.

Try a Waymo. They're great.

That's why I don't want these removed from self-driving cars. I still want to have visibility of my surroundings. Imagine being in a torrential rainstorm in one of these and you can't see shite through the windshield

They can't hold charges long enough, but yes, that would be incredible.

Not sure if I could get comfortable enough to just fall asleep in one for a while though. Need a lot more experience using them

It’s prob just bc it’s cheaper to rig up existing cars as is than it is to go and remove all the stock options that come with them.

I’m sure it won’t be too long before there are cars built ground up for autonomous use, but until then it’s just retrofitting existing ones

Some of the most irresponsible low functioning adults I've known can't or refuse to hold a real job so they drive UBER sporadically. I'll take my chances with a machine instead of playing roulette that I may get one of those low function humans with inability to forsee consequences of their actions.

Hopefully, after they pass the motor laws mandating self-driving cars, I will have a country place that no one knows about where my nephew can come drive a real car.

This. If there's a software glitch and the auto car decides to drive down a boat ramp or off a cliff, I want to be able to see my death.

You really should get out from under that rock every now and then and take a look around.

That gave me a shiver…. I’m white, Christian, male, vote for Biblical principle, morality, ethics, decency, and independence from tyrannical government rule. I’m screwed…

But they can navigate themselves to charging stations and recharge within 30 min. You wouldn’t even be aware if sleeping.

I just want to be back in the 70s. I hate the world now. I don’t care if we have self-driving cars or populate Mars. I just want a 1970 Chevelle and an 8-track. And newspaper racks. And pay phones.

I’m 45 and I’m a 100% convinced that autonomous cars are the future and by the time I’m 60 cities will have more autonomous vehicles than driver vehicles.

I expect that most won’t own a vehicle, they’ll just hail one through an app.
