Gyroscopes are pretty cool. All kinds of things you can do with them that seem to defy gravity and physics. Just search out a good quality one.

Erector sets have been mentioned along with chemistry sets. Heck - why not a big set of Tinker Toys?

G.I. Joe, prepared me for my military service. I had the jeep and spotlight etc. back in the mid 70s when he was still the big size, about the size of a Barbie doll. He also had gear, an M-16, knives and all kinds of cool stuff!! he had different uniforms and other cool gung ho gear.
