I am self employed as well. I write the same 4 estimates each year.
It's terrible but it's better than working for someone else and making 2/3 of my final income each year.

Sounds like your CPA is the one fricking you.
Exactly or OP is just not doing a very good job of accounting himself. He needs to write as much off as he can. Plus when you have to pay from last year just pay what you can now and in a month or two they will send you a letter saying they still need the rest and you pay it then. As far as quarterly taxes I know the CPA fixes it so it's? basically the same amount every quarter but if you don't make as much one quarter then don't pay as much and make up the difference the next quarter, if you make more then.
If you've owned your business for a few years you should realize if you paid enough tax by how much your business made. Your CPA sets the quarterly tax estimate based on last year's numbers. If your business doubled it's profit then yeah, your going to pay more and you need to prepare for it and not go out and blow all your money.

weagle99 Agreed! The Fair Tax ensures that those who live in luxury pay their fair share. Spend more, pay more. No longer punishing saving while rewarding debt accumulation. Makes products produced in America more competitive on foreign markets. No need for IRA's, 401k's, no April 15th......

I made a good living working for a large corporation and got hammered by taxes. Paid every penny I could possibly pay. Now, I am self employed and pay a fraction of those taxes. Tons of wrote offs, vehicle through the company, MV ins and health care ins through company, fuel, meals, etc.etc...and I can set my salary according to how much money I need and not how much I can make
No shite OP is nuts

Bunch of bitches in this thread. Hire a good accountant, pay in quarterly, don't pay again when it's return time. I always get some back

I'm reading this thread in a device my company paid for, using a plan my company paid for, going to get in a truck it paid for too, I doubt I pay a single cent out of my pocket today. Paying taxes sucks, but I have a whole lotta pretax money paying for a lot of stuff

Sounds like you should have done more research on what owning your own business means.

I just find it so funny when people think the poor are the only ones who don't pay taxes.
Worst than the poors there is a group of people that make far more than everyone in this thread combine that also benefit from taxes shelters and loop holes ie paying very little in comparison to how much those in the middle pay.

Oh the plight of the self-employed.
No one made you work for yourself, bro.

Get a GOOD CPA that will show you how to properly handle business expenses and manage your taxes

Ehh, not paying taxes whatsoever and paying a relatively low effective rate are two different things altogether. By and large, the "poor" are the only ones who do not pay income taxes. However, Romney paying an effective tax rate of like 15% is a problem as well.

Sent off just under $5k myself. Had some 1099 income and I way oversaved/overestimated my liability, so I'm not mad. Thank goodness for cpa wizardry. Feels like I got a bonus
Get you that LLC w/ S Corp election and pay yourself with income distributions to limit that self employment tax liability

You should stop doing quarterly payments. Screw giving the government an interest free loan.

Oh I long of a flat tax for everybody. And oh you didn't work well here is your bill for 2017 (with exceptions for the disabled and elderly) Everyone except full time students elderly and disable should pay something.
