Same with swine flu though. This probably happened with that as well. Most people thought it was a common cold and let it pass. The statistics are still the statistics that are given.

With some exceptions, most media is just parroting CDC/etc.
Now, the media is trying their hardest to put everything around Trump's neck (and in some cases he's making it easy), but the idea that panic is media driven seems misplaced. Panic is people-driven, and it's hard to blame the media for reporting on people stockpiling TP.
It's not like the Today show is going "GO RUN AND GET TP!" they're saying what the CDC is saying - stay cool, limit your activities, etc.
There have been a few bad actors I've seen over the past few weeks saying things outside of the mainstream - but this is one situation where I think the media is getting more blame than they deserve.
Now, the media is 24/7 now, and that leads to the perception of crisis because it's always on. But the guy sitting in front of Fox News for 8 hours straight going "man they're sensationalizing this" can't really complain - can he?

So I'm just going to play devil's advocate here because I don't necessarily think the measures being taken now are wrong or incredibly over-reactive....BUT let's say something more lethal and just as contagious gets out. People are going to look back at the COVID-19 final results to see what kind of action to take. If COVID-19 turns out to be relatively mild compared to the actions we are taking now you can bet your arse that people won't do anything like this for the next one no matter what any government agency or official says.
We see the same things for hurricane preparedness.

Around 11000 in the US. Of course your response will he see then why are we taking so many precautionary measures. The reason we are doing that because as of now this thing is ten times more deadly that the swine flu.

Also because the experts and gov did a post-mortem on the situation and are now implementing measures that they believe will lessen the public health impact.
We will learn even more from this situation and then apply that knowledge and experience the next time we deal with this kind of thing
