If any mass transit system was a good idea, billionaires would be knifing each other in the back to build them. They are nothing but a money pit and waste of taxpayers dollars.

1. Most of our urban centers are too far apart from one another for hsr to be more efficient than airlines.
2. Hsr is bankrupting China right now.
3. We have a unique federal regulatory scheme surrounding our rail network that disadvantages passenger rail by prioritizing freight. Basically, the government can’t say shite to freight rail, they have no competition, and they have no necessity to move anything faster.

because we value private property rights

There’s a conflation between rail with a city and rail between cities that I don’t really agree with.
I do think there needs to be more rail within a city to get people to their jobs.
But something like Brightline here in Florida (the closest thing to high speed rail in the US that I’m aware of)- eh, I don’t really see why we need a fast railroad to take you from Miami or Fort Lauderdale to your Orlando vacation. If you can’t afford the gas for that car trip, then you can just skip the vacation. And if you can’t afford the price of gas for that car trip, I’m not sure how you’re going to afford the hotel room anyway.

I'll have to pay for it to get built by our wasteful gov't.
If I decide to use it, i'll have to pay to use it.
If I decide to use it, i'll have to ride with people i don't want to be around, and I'll be paying for them to ride too.
Those people I don't want to be around, will inevitably be the majority of riders and eventually make it unsafe for the average law abiding american on top of being disgusting to ride on.
That's why.

Many large cities outside of the south at least have major subways or rail type transportation.
It still baffles me the south refuses to adopt good or even decent means of public transit. Mamma doesn’t want to give up that $95,000 Hummer to drive Coltyn to travel ball practice.

For the same reason that Australia doesn't.

Not sure we have the trustable society that the other civilized countries do
If when asked for a ticket , our citizens will label the workers racist or sling piss at them or something

They are trying to build one in California, and it is going exactly as expected. The Guardian
quote:
Originally the whole 494-mile route – stretching south beyond Los Angeles to Anaheim, home to Disneyland – was supposed to be finished by 2020, at a cost of around $30bn. Now, the state’s high-speed rail authority is refocusing its ambitions on a truncated 171-mile middle section in California’s Central valley, at a cost of more than $35bn and a tentative completion date of 2033. The budget for the entire line has ballooned to more than $100bn, with no end date in sight.

I think high speed rail would work great in the DFW/Houston/San Antonio triangle.
One through the southeast to Texas is a no brainer. Same for the Northeast and from San Jose to Seattle.
It doesn’t need to connect nation wide but having the regions connected is a no brainer.

Imagine THIS on rails and on a national level:
such a small world way of thinking. Couldnt imagine living in Louisiana my whole life and not realizing every other city looks different and is different.

Because Americans(Real Americans) like driving cars. Big trucks, Classic fossil fuel burning cars and Luxury sedans.
High speed rail is the camel's nose in the tent for the communists. With rails, we don't need as many roads or individual cars for travel.

Thanks for showing us the railways we built in Europe after we won both their wars for them.

bc indigenous people didn't have access to railways back in 1492 so we shouldn't be able to have it here either

The vast majority of cars are going to be fully self driving eventually. Probably within most of our lifetimes. Probably mostly electric too but we’ll see how well that technology develops. We’ll all be a lot safer for it too.

Have you ever been to the northeast?

What would make this viable? Who would ride it?
New orleans to Atlanta would stay packed but otherwise I don't see cross country passenger rail ever catching on here.

From a guy old enough to remember rail travel in the US, it was awesome
Real food cooked on the train, not made weeks earlier and nuked on a plane
Merican
Seats for poor folks
Rooms for middle class
Private cars for rich folks
They all had access to ...
Dining Car
Bar Car
Observation Car
Good seating
No social media so folks interacted for 2 - 3 days as you crossed the US
Service unheard of in todays world
