Oh I’m aware. But quitting is hard. Very hard. I quit drinking years ago but have never been able to kick the nicotine habit.

Haven't a soda since 10th grade, with the rare exception of ginger ale when I'm nauseous.

But I'll admit that on road trips I'll destroy some Taco Bell.

Do you honestly believe that there was a 6% increase in those with exceptional muscle mass outside of the parameters for BMI or that there was a 6% increase in obesity?

absolutely, quotes from the article linked in OP:

quote:

The authors cautioned that body mass index is not a perfect yardstick. It can be thrown off by extremely fit troops who score high because they have a lot of lean muscle, rather than a lot of fat.

quote:

A decade ago, when the military began to see weight as a growing problem, it started deploying countermeasures. Gym hours at bases were expanded. More unitwide workouts were scheduled. French fries were curtailed in the mess halls.

so they spent the last decade feeding them healthier and working them out more.

which creates a leaner and more muscular human being.
which according to this very article is the exact type of person that will throw off the BMI.

so after 10 years of literally creating people with misleadingly high BMI, people shouldn’t be shocked that the BMI numbers went up.

These threads are great because there are always a few people who find out they are fat

And then there's people like me, who KNOW they need to drop 25... only to find out that would still be considered obese. The chart says a 6'4 dude should be under 200

At my peak of my health, somewhere in low 20s, I was around 210 with abs, and starved myself to get there.

not saying this chart isn't a good guideline for normal heights, but it is far from accurate on the outliers.

I’ll have a diet soda maybe once a day if that. But try to buy those sweetened with stevia.

The military is most definitely fatter. Yeah maybe they don’t serve fatty shite at the chow hall but these kids can go to one of the 15 fast food places on base anytime they want. And you’d be surprised how many units never do organized PT outside of the combat arms. And if they do conduct unit PT they do like a Friday fun run or flag football. You can build all the gyms you want on base and keep them open 27 hours a day but that doesn’t mean people will use them.

I don’t care what BMI rates say, our military is fat as frick.

If you have abs l, obviously you are in good shape

This board is full of 5’9 190 pound bags of milk that don’t think they’re fat because everyone around them is obese

“Obese” is such a stupid definition and using BMI is about the dumbest fricking thing ever.

The percentage of people who are outside the parameters of using BMI due to muscle mass and other factors is a significantly small portion that could likely be managed through the margin of error. As much as people try to deny it, the BMI scale, although not the best, is usually applicable to them.

True for the general sedentary population

People joining the military (hopefully) would be more of the types that would be packing more muscle.

If this is such a problem, why the frick can’t the military do body fat analysis and get a true measure?

It's because of the seven monsters a night I needed to stay awake for 34 hours at a time due to "watches"

frick them. Figure out a better watchstanding system.

Your contention is that resulted in a 6% increase in Marines who classify as obese, 8% increase for Army, 9% increase for Air Force, and a 6-fold increase for the Navy?

That dog don’t hunt, Monsignor.

Scruffy could maybe, and he is really pushing the maybe here, agree on the Marines.

Chow halls across the military now have color-coded labels. The Marine Corps version is called “Fueled to fight.” While troops can eat what they want, healthy foods, including fruits, vegetables and whole grains, get a green label for “engage at will.” Fatty junk foods get a red label for “check fire.” Foods that should only be consumed occasionally are labeled yellow for “well-aimed shots.”
From the article.

This is the sort of useless crap that only a bloated government bureaucracy would push.
