Even the military is getting fat

The United States Navy has eliminated fried food and sugary drinks on its ships. It is keeping base gyms and fitness centers open all night. But its sailors keep getting fatter: A new Defense Department study found that 22 percent of them — roughly one in every five — now qualifies as obese.

...The Marine Corps, which has the youngest force and maintains the toughest physical fitness standards, was the leanest in the study, with 8.3 percent of Marines over the obesity threshold. The Army came in at 17.4 percent — the same as the militarywide average — and the Air Force was at 18.1 percent.

...But the problem has only worsened. In 2011, 6.4 percent of the Army, 9 percent of the Air Force and 2.3 percent of the Marine Corps was obese, according to Defense Department health data. In less than a decade, the rates in those branches have more than doubled — and in the Navy, obesity has risen sixfold.

...Today, about one-third of potential recruits are too heavy to enlist. And many recruits who are trim when they get to boot camp gain weight once they have access to Uncle Sam’s all-you-can-eat base dining facilities.

But fried chicken and a cold coke is as American as it gets.

Keep normalizing obesity, America.

For a lot of these guys it's not their fault. The women are getting so large that they have to gain weight as a self defense mechanism or they risk being crushed.

People don't realize how low the obesity threshold is.

There are people that don't even think they're fat, but are clinically obese.

It is an epidemic and so culturally ingrained now, I think we're just fricked. Our health system is being strained for billions because of fat people and no one seems to care. Instead we glorify a "body positive" movement and tell people fat is beautiful.

It is not beautiful. It is lazy and gross.

The percentage of people who are outside the parameters of using BMI due to muscle mass and other factors is a significantly small portion that could likely be managed through the margin of error.

As much as people try to deny it, the BMI scale, although not the best, is usually applicable to them.

Scruffy has a BMI of 23.7.

He was asked by a coworker why he was so skinny.

We have fricked our ability to determine what is a healthy weight.

This will only get worse and medical bills will continue to increase.

I understand, but I would think that those outside of the parameters are likely over-represented in the military.

BMI is good enough in studies like this.

Is this the thread where all the 5' 10" 230 baws compare themselves to NFL running backs?

Happened to me. Going from poor college kid to an all you can eat facility is amazing. Never got fat, but definitely gained some weight.

Got fat when I had a kid.

A sign that it is likely not as contributing of a factor is shown in the article.

The one which has the strictest standards is the marine Corp and they still showed a substantial increase from 2011 to 2019.

The way in which we have determined BMI hasn’t changed nor has the general philosophy of working out significantly changed over the past 8 years.

This is an issue that is outside the “BMI isn’t accurate” complaint.

I legitimately don't understand how pro/college players carry so much weight at their height. I'm 6'5" and I've had to struggle to get to 220 in muscle mass. I was hovering around 180-190 for almost a decade.

My BMI is 25.6. I'm 6'2" 200 lbs. and should lose 10-15 lbs. People call me skinny and I am not skinny. According to my doctor, I am just over the threshold for acceptable weight. I am clinically overweight and am one of the skinnier people in my office.

Unreal how our perception of body weight has changed. If someone from high school in 1950 was transported to a high school now, they'd think they were at fat camp.

A large portion of the military sits on their arse and is fat, no doubt.

I bet even combat arms is over represented and is not indicative of actual fat percentage because there will be more athletes in those MOS.
